Default Val: Van Halen parents marriage "volatile, violent"

Going through Val's new book "Finding It" at the supermarket, I saw one paragraph that contained a fact that I haven't seen printed yet. In essence she explains some of EVH's behavior by the fact that his parents had a "volatile, sometimes violent" relationship (her words).

Seems to mean that VH senior was hitting his old lady. Seems to corroborate stuff said by Mick Jones in his recent interview about VH.

Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

Q: who was the biggest douche that you have worked with?

A: Eddie Van Halen hands down he threatened all the stage hands that if we wernt all pushed to the side when he got off stage that he would "bash our faces in"

Now the new David-Lee-Roth-Van Halen album, “Tokyo Dome In Concert,” is available for purchase, and it’s super, super, super, super, super, super, crazy bad. - Doug Elfman

I remember someone else saying something to this effect, but it was actually the other way around. Ed's Dad could be verbally abusive, but his Mom was the hitter in the family. We're not talking UFC here, but she'd hit in a kind of slapping smacking kind of way when she got worked up. I have no idea if this is true, but there was an interview a while back with Ed where he said that their Mom was less than supportive of their professional musical path. She'd say to Ed 'you're going to end up a nothing nut like your Father!"

On the other hand though and coming from old school European upbringing myself...as well as being involed with a wonderful Malaysian lady who also grew up in an old school home, this type of stuff was kind of the norm, and we both ended up ok. I don't buy this as an excuse for growing up to be a dickhead.
I pony it up to Ed, living in a pretty sheltered safe bubble too long. Then when reality hits, and things don't go his way, he acts like a spoiled child.
She looks so $#@!'n good ,so sexy and so frail....Somethin's got the bite on me, I'm goin' straight to Hell.

Back in the day there were many husbands, I'm sure, that raised their hands to their spouses.

    Not a big deal.

I never said I CONDONE it. Calm down dude. Don't be so dramatic.

It's no different than acknowledging that back then women had virtually no say in the household and that there jobs were cooking and cleaning, and THAT IS IT.

I'm not saying I agree with that either but that's the way it was. So it's not big deal, to me, if that's how Ed's Father was.

I'm saying it's no big deal that Ed's father MIGHT have raised his hands to his wife. The husband was the dominant figure in the household. It wasn't COMPLETELY UNCOMMON.

It was wrong but it was 50 years ago. There were many things that were done back then that were wrong. But just because I say it's no big deal doesn't mean I condone it.

50 years ago. Who gives a shit? Move on.

Within the context of the time frame to which Mitch is referring, his comments merely point to a norm of the day. Shameful, pathetic and unacceptable, but typical of our often disgraceful history (i.e. treatment of aboriginals, blacks, immigrants, impoverished peoples, etc.)
