Default God Bless Marnie Stern, the new Queen of tapping!

She may not look metal or sing metal, but Marnie Stern is definitely the first true guitar innovator to come out in a few years when it comes to tapping. Finally a young act I can get into (her high voice can be a bit irritating though)!

Here's a short presentation of her:

I think us VH fans should give a warm welcome to Marnie Stern!

Heard a clip a while back from a link on another music board but it didn't interest me. This tune is........ catchy and certainly different from the most other guitar-driven music out there right now. So I checked out a few of her other vids on Youtube both live and promo videos.

I give her props for playing rock guitar in today's musical climate but much of her other stuff has an almost "Buckethead meets J-Pop" manic style both with vox and guitar that quickly becomes fatiguing to listen to. It's like she should be doing soundtracks for anime. She has potential though.

it does sorta sound like a soundtrack o an anime movie.

what is it about today's music today's musical climate? There's a ton of guitar driven music out there today and in recent years...whether we're talking about audioslave, the mars volta, bon jovi (whose last record hit #1), kings of leon, white stripes, raconteurs, buckcherry, them crooked vultures, creed, hell even nickleback. these are all 'guitar driven' rock bands and are all enjoying or have enjoyed great success.

this chick's music is cool in its own way but I don't think it's existence in this era is anymore noteworthy than if it had come out any other year...in fact, i think it's quite the obvious. I expect to hear stuff like this nowadays. Had this come out 20 years ago I'd have thought it way much more unique and different and interesting than everything else.

I sort of think about it like a jar of marbles.

Say you have a jar full of white marbles and then you stick one cool looking wavy coloured one in there. That marble is going to really stick out. Now then, take the same multi-coloured, spirally marble and stick in a jar full of marbles of all sorts of colours and patterns. Each one different from the next and each completely unique and one of a kind. Suddenly that first marble doesn't really stick out so much.
    Stay out of it, dude.

This girl seems to use tapping in a different way. Instead of just during the intro, solo and outro, she taps during choruses. Seems to me worthy of noting and saluting!

Kids should be encouraged to shred!

yeah, I like how the rhythm is carried by tapping, that's kinda neat. I've only heard a few songs here and there that do that.

I think kids should be encouraged to master their instrument and find their voice. I dont think tapping or shredding is necessarily indicative of someone mastering guitar. I think shredding for the sake of shredding is pretty lame.

I do like that you posted this chick though. She's definitely worthy of note.
