Default LA - Where to live?

My job is opening a new location in downtown LA. Within a year, I know I'm going to be asked to move there. However, coming from small beginnings in East Texas, the Phoenix, AZ, area was huge to me... and LA is even bigger.

Where are the best places to live? I just want to feel safe at night. Do those even exist in the LA area? I heard Pasadena was nice, but I'm not really sure.

What do you LA guys think?
    Your favorite band sucks.

With the clowns running this town, you might be safer in LA.

If you have some more specifics like how far you want to commute, what you're willing to spend, etc. it will help out alot.

Downtown LA is enjoying a real renaissance. If you have a bit of money and kids, you might be better off in Mount Washington, which is more residential. Eagle Rock is also not too far and more affordable/middle class.
Trendy/Bohemian would be Silverlake/Los Feliz, but has become more expensive in the lat few years (pronounced "las vilas").
You could also do a 30mn commute like me and live in Pasadena, well known for having been the first home of a prominent Dutch family...

I must say that I have never lived in LA, but have visited my relatives about a dozen times
Pasadena is a wonderful suburb. My family is from the east coast and Pasadena has some of that east coast flavor in Old Town Pasadena. The way the trees line the streets etc. The weather is the best too.

Ditto on the more info. I was never a big fan of downtown, but I left in '07,
so I can't comment on any "rennaisance" over the last 2 years. Pasadena is
ok, as is Glendale and the surrounding regions if "safety" is your chief
concern. More suburban and middle-class. For me though, it's only worth
living in LA if you're on the beach. Santa Monica is probably the nicest
(outside of the cost prohibitive Palisades or Malibu - which is getting too far
away anyway), as are Manhattan /Hermosa/Redondo, but again, a helluva a
commute from Downtown there. I could only ever afford Venice Beach, which
was perfect for me. Depends on what you like. But it's just south of Santa
Monica and has a lot of color and nightlife. And while it's a still a commute
from Downtown, it's a straight shot across the 10 and can be manageable
depending on your schedule. Just go check it out first is my advice. But I'd
guess you'd want to avoid Hollywood, the Valley, and anything East of
    Downtown for sure.

Hollywood has improved somewhat in most recent years. Around Miracle Mile ("central la"), park La Brea is pretty decent. In the valley, studio city is pretty cool and not far from the center.
I think the only way to live by the ocean is if your job is there. Traffic has become a nightmare there, so I wouldn't recommend it.

Also beware when getting advice, there are a lot of neighborhood snobs here who will diss another area they know nothing about, just coz it's "cool" to say this or that part of town sucks. For example, technically EVH lives in the Valley. In the San Fernando Valley you can find everything from mega rich ppl to dirt poor areas.

I lived in Studio City my first year in LA. It's alright. As is adjacent Sherman Oaks and anything on the south side of Ventura. But everything north I would recommend avoiding, even if there are exceptions like Noho or Taluca Lake or whatever. By and large the Valley is a wasteland and kind of depressing. If that's snobby, so be it. It's my opinion and I'm sure xaminer can suss it all out. Also, I would say Ed lives in the Hills or just Laurel Canyon, even if that is technically the SFV, it's due south of the Valley proper or what we've come to think of by that phrase. I advised against Hollywood on the safety thing alone. In any case, too much geography to advise on the slim details. LA is massive.

Well, you probably don't actually want to live in LOS ANGELES.

Again a ton more info is needed. You guys are just naming places.

E-Roc, there are great places to live in the Valley. I mean I wouldn't be caught dead living in Studio City, so to each his own. And North Hollywood? I wouldn't send my enemies to live there. But Tarzana (where I was born and raised), Encino, Woodland Hills, West Hills, Calabasas are all wonderful places to live, actual families live there, and it's where most of the money is frankly. Nobody drives through the West part of the Valley and calls it a wasteland. They say, "Shit I can't afford to live here."

I used to commute from Ventura County (where I live and would never leave) all the way to downtown LA when I worked at the Times. The worst drive ever, I mean 2 hours each way with all the traffic, but it's where I wanted to live. Of course it finally took its toll on me, and I work near home now, but it's all about what you can tolerate drive-time wise.

I will say you DO NOT want to live in downtown LA no matter how much they're fixing it up. You just don't live there.

The only thing I know about LA is the airports!

I have a client in Corvina, and it seems ok. Of course I live in the northeast and go there every February, so it will of course look ok to me!
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

I would have to imagine where you live out there is a lot like being anywhere near Miami...just a few miles difference can make a huge difference as to whether you are in a nice neighborhood or a shithole. Hell, there's a lot of areas like that.
