    Default Rock Candy

Since basically melting the CF CD from so much play, I rotated the 20 or so CD’s that I keep in my car last weekend. The first Montrose CD was added to the playlist. I probably hadn’t listened to the CD in easily over a year. My favorite track has always been Rock Candy (sometimes I do prefer Rock the Nation).

With all of the CF discussions over the last year, the common criticism of Sam’s lyrics came to mind as I was listening to RC. “You’re rock candy, baby – hard, sweet, and sticky.” A 35 year old classic chorus from a classic rock band. I started to think that the chorus was really typical for Sammy’s style and inspiration and not much different than what he does today.

So I guess my point is that if RC was on the CF CD, how many people would say – “Sam has hit a low for stupid lyrics”, “the song was great until the chorus ruined it.”, etc.

Maybe I’m off base but “you’re hard, sweet, and sticky” has been par for the course for many decades and just recently, it has become some great detriment to his music to certain people.

    Any thoughts?

Sam will always be panned by some for what is labeled 'cliche' or cheese lyrics...i still believe he's a good poet...not everyone writes brilliant lyrics all the time...

I actually hoped that the 'foot would pull off a couple of other Montrose tunes on top of BMS during the tour...Space Station #5 is killer in my book...that whole disc really rocks...
...and in the end, on dreams we will depend...

For all those who believe that Sam can't write profound lyrics, listen to the following tracks and get back to me:

    Mine All Mine
    Right Now
    Seventh Seal
    Don't Tell Me
    Feelin
    Crossing Over
    Humans Being

These are the most profound lyrics written in any VH era!

I may be one of the first to call Sam out on shit lyrics, but this doesn't rank, and is
even poetic somehow. Hard, sweet and sticky. Who here hasn't known bitches like
that? Also consider it was the 70s/Sam was much younger/that whole disc is classic -
Bad Motor Scooter? - it's much easier to forgive. It was a different era. The contrite
sexism came with the territory. The fact that he may have never much matured
passed this though, makes any subsequent offenses that much more unfortunate.

I know I am in the minority, but I much prefer Sam's solo work to Montrose.

Just have never been able to get into it.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

the fact that Sammy hasn't matured has worked out to be a great thing for his fans...62 years old and still acting like a kid...i plan on doing the same!

I think Sammy has matured quite a bit over the last few years. There are some songs with great lyrics, some interesting songs with a bit of cheese and, admittedly, some with dumb lyrics. Red Harring is his specialty. Some of the cheesy songs have a certain charm that makes them work.

Everybody seems to own a copy of the original Montrose record. However, Paper Money was good too. It was more produced, but it had some good songs on it as well.

It is rock music. It is not supposed to be Keats, Longfellow and Frost set to music.

I was unaware that Sammy re-recorded Rock Candy with Montrose in 1999 and released it as a backing single with Little White Lie. The information is on Wiki and there is one copy for sale on Amazon for $150. Anyone know if this was released anywhere else? I'd love to hear the remake.

Note - there are a few LWL singles on eBay but they do not have Rock Candy.

I actually have that cd single somewhere, didn't know it was going for 150 bucks till just now.

It's pretty cool, the story is that the band was in the studio and when sammy walked in they just started playing it sammy says "here we fucking go" and starts singing it. about 1/2 way through the song it changes a little bit and sam is kind of laughing saying they can't be changing the arrangement on this. It sounds like it was supposed to be more like a soundcheck so they could get ready to record leaving the warmth of the womb and they just had the tape rolling.

    it's pretty damn cool.
