    Default Killing Joke

This thread's for Killing Joke, one of the great, mostly overlooked classic punk/goth/industrial/whatever genre you wanna shoehorn them into. Most here that even heard of them know them from their mid 80's hits, "Love Like Blood" and "Eighties" or the song Metallica covered, "The Wait." But their catalog spanning the end of the 70's through their newest album coming out in early Summer is full of great music. Here's a list of their best, most recommended albums for the first-time listener:

    What's THIS For...! (1981)
    Fire Dances (1983)
    Night Time (1985)
    Pandemonium (1994)
    Killing Joke (2003)

A trio of live performances spanning 3 decades:

    1985 "Sun Goes Down"

1995 "Eighties" (with a bit of Nirvana's Come As You Are")

    2005 "Blood On Your Hands"

I liked "Seeing Red" and "Total Invasion" from the self titled 2003 disc. I bought Hossanas(2006) but have not listened to it enough yet. Look forward to the new disc.

IMO, the 2003 self titled album is the best thing they've ever done. One of the few albums I can listen to from start to finish without skipping a track.

Hosannas is generally considered a letdown from most hard core fans after the '03 album. It's probably their most overtly "metal" album and while I agree the album isn't up to much of their catalog, it does have some excellent tracks although the muddy production (it was recorded in a concrete basement) does it no favors.

Just prior to their reunion tour in 2008, they recorded many of their classics live in studio and released the sessions as "Duendes" on cd that has a really raw, in-your-face feel to it. That disc is hard to find but well worth a listen.

True but was Big Paul playing drums on that one? Coz they need big Paul. To me, the best, most crushing song of KJ is "Requiem," particularly the live version from the show in Germany:

I'll drink to that. Pandemonium was good, too. One of my bands did "Follow The Leaders" (from Night Time, I believe).

Singer Jaz Coleman is an interesting guy.

If you're talking about Paul playing on the Duendes album, yes, he's one it along with Youth.

"Follow The Leaders" is off their second album, "What's This For?" That record's got a lot of their early best tunes on it like "Fall Of Because" and "Tension." Interestingly, a buddy of mine who went with me to one of the 3 LA shows for Van Halen's 1981 Fair Warning tour had the cassette for that album which had just come out the week of the show and we listened to it on the drive to The Forum and I was impressed enough to remember to pick up up a few days later.

Regarding Jaz, yeah, he's an interesting guy all right if a bit pretentious and full of himself. But he's never boring. Here's a trailer for the long-delayed semi-biopic about Killing Joke that will finally get some sort of release this year:

    Hell yeah!

I will probably try to catch the LA show if I'm in town. I hope their new album will return to more memorable songs like during their "Pandemonium" era.

    Killing Joke Tour
    Category: Music
    Honour the fire
It is with great pain that the band have had to postpone the European and American tour until later in the year.
We are 3 months overdue in delivering this album! I think it could very well be the greatest album we have ever made.
The reasons why we are so over due are many...not least because we have so many contender tracks and that they deserve the attention to detail that we are now giving them.We have survived equipment being hijacked ,tapes being withheld, nervous breakdowns, family bereavements, blood lettings and a host of other challenges of biblical proportions and were still at the rock face as determined as ever to give it our best and every drop we have.
reluctantly our managers and record company have persuaded us that it would be criminal to rush release a masterpiece and its really about getting it right. As i write we are still adding various overdubs and distilling down the mix to its definitive conclusion. She has been an ambitious album to manifest and we are now at the final ascent and i have to say its one of the greatest albums i have had the privilege to be involved with ...EVER!
It is stunning! I have been living and breathing it for over 4 months and i'm still jawdroppingly amazed at its power and beauty ...its far out. Despite the frustration and inconvenience of having to wait for this and having to re-arrange the next few months schedule to accommodate these changes ,I am sure it will be worth it.Massive apologies to those who have rearrange their schedules and lives around this turn of events.
I guarentee double orgasms all round when you hear the sound of Big Paul's drum kit reducing your senses to a pulp.
Today we were supposed to master it ,yesterday we had to postpone as we are still recording and mixing!!!
We have gone through so much to get here we have to see this through to the end.
thanks for all the continued support and inspiration.
    y

I include a message from Paul on the bands behalf
    Dear Friends and Family,

It's with great reluctance I have to inform you all of our postponing the upcoming tour dates and rescheduling of the album release.

I am incredibly grateful to the The Gathering and fans for all their support and it pains me very much that things have unfolded as they have.

We are all super excited about the recent recording and I personally am very proud to have had taken part and had so much input in this endeavour.

We have all given our utmost to make this an album to be proud of and capture the best that is Killing Joke.

Unforeseen circumstances have made meeting deadlines impossible and have let to this extremely hard decision.

Of course all tickets will be honoured for the rescheduled shows in September and we look forward eagerly playing the new material to you.

    With Respect.

    Big Paul. KJ.

    ++++++++

BTW, here's a low-res clip of one of the new songs from the forthcoming album:

Yep, that's right. Only happens once every 4 or 5 years but this month, the greatest fucking band on the planet releases their newest studio album and imo, it's up there among the best work they've ever done. Killing Joke's "Absolute Dissent." You can check some tracks here:

    Absolute Dissent

    Fresh Fever

    The Great Cull

    Endgame

Can't get by the guy's voice.

Their lead guitarist comes up with some tasty riffs however, and I love The Wait, both their original version and Metallica's cover, but I like Metallica's version better.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his
