    Default Non-English language music

I'm a firm adherent of the premise that music is a universal language and I've been lucky enough to have lived in a few countries where, as a result, I have been exposed to music where I didn't exactly understand the words.

I just wondered if a few of us here might have stumbled upon some gems that we would not ever have heard, if it were not for some lucky encounters. It would be shaming to think that popular music only exists in the English language, after all.

Not to say, just a touch arrogant.

Some of my earliest musical memories are of songs by crooner Charles Aznavour, bizarrely enough.

I shared an apartment with a French student while I was living in Barcelona and this song by Gerald DePalma was always a winner, when, or should I say, if, we managed to get some ladies back to the house. We would break out the guitars and serenade the girls. I actually didn't even hear the original until much later, but it is a great song and video....

    Gerald DePalma "J'en reve encore"

Also, this absolutely stunning "feel good" song, gratefully received from a good Spanish (ie. Hot) girlfriend.....

    M-Clan "Quedate a dormir"

..... and if anyone can find a vid of Uruguayan rock funk outfit, Abuela Coca performing "Derrocha" I would be extremely grateful. Otherwise, since searches have proved fruitless, I might just have to post the most boring video of all time, just to let ears have the pleasure.

    Any others... ?

growing up in a Spanish speaking home of Cuban parents, I've had the pleasure of enjoying a great deal of Spanish music.

I've most recently found Jose' Jose'. Sylvio Rodriguez is an incredible troubadour/singer/songwriter from Cuba who is outstanding. Pablo Milanes. Armando Manzanero and on and on and an on.

    Good thread.
    Stay out of it, dude.

If you have the links, please post them broken.

In the meantime, I like to imagine you and the wife pumping up the volume on "Quedate a dormir" and dancing on the sofa. Loud enough to piss off the neighbours and also loud enough to invite them in and join you.

    Pillow fight.

Silvio doing Ojala. The crowd actually takes over the vocals for a segment of the song. It's a bit of an anthem for many. Legend has it that it is about Fidel Castro while other stories say it's simply a story of vile animosity towards a former lover. You decide.

Silvio is one of the finest lyricists I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.

    Here's Jose' Jose'

He's considered the Frank Sinatra of Latin America. At one point there simply was no artist bigger than Jose Jose. He is known as "El Príncipe de la Canción" or "the Prince of the Song." His voice was one of the finest I've ever heard. I say "was" because he can barely speak anymore. His is a fascinating story that would make an incredible film...though there have been films made about him in Latin America.

I'm actually working on an arrangement of that song to perform with the group I play for. I want to add just a bit more guitar and change the drums up just a bit...other than that it's identical.
    Stay out of it, dude.

I've had to learn a few Thai songs for a New Year's gig tomorrow night and
am exposed to Thai music of every stripe all the time. Not that I understand
much of it or if it would even matter if it were in English. I don't normally
hear the lyrics first, if ever. Had to learn Black Magic Woman for the same
gig and was surprised to realize he actually uses the phrase "magic sticks"
therein, which seemed like an odd and long way to go for a rhyme somehow.
I'm just to the point now where For Your Life off Physical Grafitti makes
sense as a title to me.

I remember a metal show on college radio growing up that would play stuff
in French, Portugese, anything, and I didn't give a shit if it sounded good.
The Mars Volta does a lot of stuff in Spanish that's awesome and I really
dig some of Onmyouza's stuff from Japan. Speaking of, there was another
Jap band called Bow Wow (not Bow Wow Wow) that always did one side
of their records in their native tongue. It's always been more about the
sonics than the lyrics, I guess. But even I have my limits, Mr. Hagar.

Spanish band "Heroes Del Silencio" used to be pretty good.

They also had a metal band called "Baron Rojo" (the Red Baron):

The best French metal band TRUST (probably best european hard rock band outside of Germany and the UK):

Being a 100% Greek American..born in the USA with very close ties to Greece and my family and culture I love the music. I'm first gen here so American but with a profound love and ties to my Greek heritage.

I dig stuff like this. I really dig the ancient music too. I have a bouzouki and jam this stuff occasionally in the appropriate settings and not so sometimes. lol Recorded many metalish hard rock ish progressive stuff that marries this to my more traditional blues and American influences. I need to upgrade my pc so I can really finish all that stuff.

    Cool thread!

Like I said, they could be singing in Sanskrit and I'd still love the badass
grooves, brutal guitar and phenomenal drumming, pero nosotros Espanol es muy excellente, ademas.

    Beautiful in any language.

Say what you will about the broken Engrish and the supermullet mushroom cloud, I was all about the Warning From Stardust circa 1981.

This is an oldie, but IMO is one of the seminal salsa songs, "Pedro Navaja" by salsa legend Ruben Blades.

How'd I forget these guys. Maybe because whether they sing in Icelandic or
their own made-up language, the voice is just another instrument. I mean,
What is a guitar saying? It wants to kill your mama?

    Sing along now:

    - Sæglópur

    á lífi
    Kominn heim
    Sæglópur
    á lífi
    Kominn heim
    það kemur kafari
