    Default HDMI Connectors

I have what may be a stupid question but I have a problem. I have a surround sound unit that only has one HDMI connector which prevents me from connecting both my cable box and PS3 to it. Is there something I can buy that will enable me to connect everything through the surround sound?
Or do I need to purchase a surround sound unit that has multiple HDMI "IN" connectors?

Easy get hdmi to componet cables and go from there. I hate hdmi anyway. I use componet cables religiously plus they're cheaper.

why do you hate HDMI? I've only got one cable (from my DVD to my TV) - the rest is component. Not sure I see a difference, but still too early to tell!

But if you have both HDMI and component inputs, you could connect one device with the HDMI and the other with component.

First off, the hdmi cables are almost double the cost of componet and some say that because of all the wires all run together that there can be some interference, same problem happened with s-video cables and thats why they're almost extinct. All my A/V career oriented friends recommend component cables so I go with them.

But if you don't use HDMI cables then is the output still in high def? For example, my Blu Ray player and my HD cable box?

There is an adapter that you can get that you can get that will enable multiple hdmi inputs. My friend has one.

HDMI vs Component cables.....some pieces of electronics will not be able to 'sense' what type of TV you are hooking up to and will go to a default position of 720i/p, thus, not giving you the full resolution that your TV is capable of.

I am a HDMI fan, the cheap ones work just fine. I have an expensive one and a cheap one and I can't tell the difference. You can get a cheap HDMI cable on the net for 3-5 bucks. I had the issue you have a while back and I used a HDMI straight to my HD TV, and used a optical for sound to my receiver. You can go in settings in PS3 and use HDMI for display and select audio to go over optical.

Does your receiver have a optical?

Or you could use component on your cable box, cause all you are going to get from cable HD is 720p, and use HDMI for display and sound on PS3 as you will utilize 1080p here. This will probably be your best bet.

So cable HD receivers only provide up 720p? The same for satellite HD receivers? If so, any word on if/when they will have the capability to broadcast 1080P?

Depends on the cable provider, but I know Brighthouse here has 1080i, as does DirecTv.

I know direct TV does 1080i but that's a wash between that and 720p. I think my cable looks better on 720p instead of 1080i, progressive displays a better image than interlaced. IMO and in most everyone's opinion.

I was also going to ask if you have optical.. I dont like my vid switching from my sound reciever, so all surrround sound is hooked up thru optical, all HDMI cables run to TV, which mine has 4 inputs.

MY cable thru 1080i HDMI, looks 1000 times better than 720p when using HD channels.
