NYC Mayor rips EMTs who refused to help dying pregnant mother

NYC victim's mom: EMTs were 'inhuman' not to help

NEW YORK — Two EMTs on a coffee break who failed to help a dying pregnant woman acted "to the best of their abilities," their lawyer said Tuesday, while the woman's mother condemned them as "inhuman."

The EMTs, Jason Green and Melissa Jackson, were suspended without pay and the Brooklyn district attorney opened a criminal investigation into the case. State health officials, who called the inaction "appalling," were also investigating along with the city's fire department, which oversees EMTs.

The two emergency workers were at the eatery when Eutisha Rennix, an employee, collapsed. Witnesses have said the EMTs told workers to call 911, then left when they were asked to help the woman, a mother of a 3-year-old son who was expecting her second child.

Cynthia Rennix, the 25-year-old woman's mother said, the EMTs shouldn't have taken those jobs if they weren't willing to get involved in emergency situations.

"You are very inhuman; you don't need to have a job like you do," she said.

Douglas Rosenthal, the EMTs' lawyer, pushed back against what he called a "rush to judgment" that had vilified his clients. He said the facts will show that Green and Jackson acted "appropriately to the best of their abilities" at Au Bon Pain in Brooklyn on Dec. 9. He declined to speak more specifically about the situation.

Rennix had complained of feeling dizzy before collapsing in the rear of the store, according to a person who saw it happen. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the person wasn't authorized to speak publicly.

Green and Jackson, who are emergency service dispatchers, were in the front of the store making their order, the person said. The witness never saw them go into the back where Rennix was before they left the premises.

That witness said Rennix, who was six months pregnant with a girl, was also an asthma sufferer.

Rennix died at a hospital shortly afterward, her baby too premature to survive.

Cynthia Rennix said she didn't know the cause of her daughter's death. Calls to the hospital where she died weren't returned Tuesday.

As dispatchers, Green, a 6-year veteran, and Jackson, a 4-year veteran, are fully trained EMTs. A spokesman for the EMTs' union said all dispatchers are required to be field-trained EMTs or paramedics in order to be more effective at their jobs, and are capable of getting involved in emergency situations.

"All of our members are qualified to make that initial assessment and in some cases, start medical care," said Robert Ungar, spokesman for the Uniformed EMTS and Paramedics, FDNY.

"Being dispatchers is not a defense" for inaction, he said.

A FDNY spokesman said all members take an oath to help others whenever emergency medical care is needed.

Department spokesman Jeffrey Hammond said, "The charges are appalling and the Department is vigorously investigating both EMTs."

The Fire Department has suspended Green and Jackson without pay.

Rennix said she has yet to decide whether she is going to take any legal action. She is taking care of her daughter's son.

A furious Mayor Bloomberg yesterday blasted two EMTs who allegedly refused to help a dying, pregnant mom because they were on break at a Brooklyn coffee shop.

"It was unconscionable, [an] outrage, pick some adjectives and stick it in," the fuming mayor said at a news conference a day after The Post broke the scandal involving tragic mom Eutisha Revee Rennix, 25.

"The Fire Department, including EMS, is responsible for life-saving, and their first responsibility is to do that," the mayor said. "But even if they weren't part of the Fire Department sworn to protect all of us, just normal human beings, drop your coffee and go help somebody if they're dying. C'mon."

The two EMTs -- identified for The Post as Melisa Jackson and Jason Green -- were buying bagels in the Au Bon Pain at the Metrotech Center in Downtown Brooklyn on Dec. 9 when Rennix collapsed there -- and they allegedly ignored her.

Her toddler son has been crying, "Where's Mommy?" since her death, said her stunned and grieving family. Rennix's mother, Cynthia, angrily added that the FDNY hasn't offered one word of explanation -- or sympathy -- for the fiasco.

I think the spokesman's words are appropriate and show how seriously they are taking the issue. As for explanation or sympathy - one's not available until after the investigation, and the second is kind of vague. Exactly how are they supposed to show sympathy? Besides - with a lawsuit looming, they are unfortunately going to have to be very careful about what they say.

It sounds bad for those two, but as always, we don't know the other side of the story. I wish the Mayor would have learned from Obama's gaff over the Harvard professor/police issue - it's not always how it seems. It's so damn irresponsible to make a comment like that before you have all the facts. Now you have to wonder if those two will be thrown under the bus for political expediency even if they didn't do anything wrong.

Do you really think it's possible they didn't do anything wrong?!? Come on. Use common sense. Sometimes it's nice to hear a politician NOT be politically correct (just like you're doing here). Sometimes human beings are pathetic wastes of space....it's nice to hear them being called out for that.

He doesn't know, and neither do you. That was his point.

It's not only completely possible that they did wrong, but most likely. However, the point is that there is always the possibility that we, as outsiders to the situation, don't have all the facts, and the emotions revolving around the situation might be distorting what really happened.

We shouldn't jump to conclusions, regardless of how bad things look. That's all jrk was trying to convey.

I know what point he (and you) are trying to make. I can read, and also have the ability to comprehend what I'm reading. I just have no idea why you or anybody else can say (after reading that story), "Well let's hear their side of the story". What scenario can possibily justify those EMTs not helping that woman? Please think of one, just one, and I'll shut my trap.

    Come on, post it.

I have no idea what that scenario might be. Nor do I care wasting my time imagining one just for sensitive litle nicholas. However, there is a reason our justice system is set up the way it is--because not everything is the way it seems, and making knee-jerk reactions does a justice to nobody.

Yet, you still may be correct, and more than likely are, that these two dispatchers are completely in the wrong and should be dealt with properly. But that still doesn't change my point.

If anyone wants to see a real-life scenario of what kind of damage to person's life that jumping to conclusions can do, then I would recommend reading John Grisham's The Innocent Man.

Uh - maybe it didn't go down that way at all, that the person WRITING the story got the facts completely wrong?

Maybe the person who collapsed wasn't in view, and they thought their chain was being yanked? Certainly means they fucked up, but not that they're bad human beings.

Or maybe they are complete dregs of society that should be taken to the nearest alley and beaten - I know plenty of situations where I'd advocate for that.

    All I "know" is this:

The Duke Lacrosse kids were guilty as hell - until it turned out people were making shit up.

The FACTS were clear that the Harvard cop was on a power trip putting that professor in cuffs - until it turned out he handled it reasonably well based on the circumstances from his POV.

Everything's about circumstances, and until you know the whole story, it's not doing anyone any good at all to speculate. And the MAYOR of NYC should have a better handle on that before opening his yap. If it turns out the initial facts are correct, THEN he can go in front of the press and let loose.

    Instant gratification, NOW NOW NOW.

Can you see the link between this thread, the commercials you hate thread, and the Brittany Murphy thread?

NEW YORK — Two emergency medical technicians accused of refusing to help a dying pregnant woman say they were never asked to examine her nor told the extent of her condition.

Lawyer Douglas Rosenthal says his clients were only asked to summon an ambulance on Dec. 9 when they were taking a break in a Brooklyn eatery.

He says Jason Green and Melisa Jackson never saw Eutisha Rennix, who was in the back of the Au Bon Pain, and that other employees didn't seem overly concerned about her condition.

Rosenthal says an employee only told Jackson that Rennix was exhibiting asthmatic symptoms and had some abdominal pain.

Witnesses have said the EMTs told workers to call 911, then left when they were asked to help. Rennix later died.

EMT Accused of Ignoring Dying NYC Woman Is Killed

NEW YORK – An emergency medical technician accused of refusing to help a dying pregnant woman while on his coffee break has been shot and killed near a New York City nightclub.

Police say Jason Green was shot in the face near Manhattan's Greenhouse club Sunday morning. Green was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. There have been no arrests.

Green and fellow EMT Melisa Jackson had been under criminal investigation for their handling of a distressed woman at a Brooklyn bakery Dec. 9. They were in line at the bakery when 25-year-old Eutisha Rennix collapsed.

Witnesses say the EMTs told workers to call 911 and left without helping the six-months-pregnant woman, whose prematurely born baby also died.

Green and Jackson insisted they tried to get help. They were suspended without pay.

The disgraced medic who was fatally shot in a nightclub brawl had been standing over one of his assailants and punching him when a friend of the man he was pummeling opened fire, officials said yesterday.

The news came as The Post learned early this morning that three suspects were being questioned and the battle had been captured on video.

EMT Jason Green -- who was under investigation for allegedly refusing to help a dying woman -- had tried repeatedly to walk away before he was drawn into the fight, according to cops.

But his assailants would not let it drop, and, although outnumbered, Green gained the upper hand.

The melee started shortly after the 32-year-old medic and a friend had tried to get into Greenhouse, a popular nightclub in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood, at about 5 a.m. Sunday. Bouncers turned them away because the pal was wearing shorts, officials said.

They used a cell phone to call two women who had been waiting for them inside the club.

The women joined the two men, and all of them were standing outside when a man began arguing with Green.

A witness told cops the dispute involved a parking spot, but Green's pal said he knew nothing of such an argument.

They took their battle across the street, where, after the medic's friend tried to break up the fight, two other men joined the attack on Green. When they were unable to get the best of him, a fourth man came and opened fire, officials said.

"He was a built guy," said an EMT who worked with Green.

    "He could hold his own."

The assailants fled in a BMW, which the cops tracked down. The suspects are young men in their 20s, from Brooklyn.

Although the tape shows the fistfight and the shooting, it's too blurry for faces to be recognized.

A co-worker said Jackson was devastated by Green's death.

"Melisa is completely destroyed by this," the colleague said. "She's not handling it too well."

whatever anyone may think of this guy and the allegations against him, you gotta admit that those pussies who shot him are a bunch of losers. One guy can't beat him up so another comes over. They can't do it so another comes over they can't do it so someone shoots him. What a cowardly pathetic way to handle you business.
    Stay out of it, dude.
