Default Classic Rock Magazine's Van Halen Buyer's Guide

    Here's the link...
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

    Cool read!

Gee, the write up was so harsh on VHIII, I think it was written by some folks here.

This is priceless. Right on the money.

"Van Halen and Cherone was a disastrous mismatch, and produced just one album – that sold only 500,000 copies, when every other VH album had shifted at least two million. The reason is that Van Halen III stinks like a wet dog. Every song sucks, and Cherone sings them like a drowning man. It’s an album so bad, in fact, that Van Halen have never made another since."

Great read. Surprised they would list OU812 as being worthy though. Terrible production and boring songs imo. VHIV, if ever released, will soon follow in VHIII's tracks.

I agree that VH4 would probably be a bust.....just not to the depths of VH3's suckness. On their worst day they won't ever equal that train wreck.

And I'd just like to say if it did, then that'd be just fine and dandy with me....OH! Y'all have to admit that the music on III is just AMAZING!!

Sorry, I just don't understand how anyone couldn't appreciate the different music paths III explored......But then again, what do I know???

That all depends on who Ed gets to play bass in the studio.

if they ever get in there that is...

Nearly every one of us that hates VH3 has said it has nothing to do with "the path" of VH3. There was no bigger "path" change than 5150 following 1984 and that was hugely accepted.

True, but III was just completely different than anything they ever did...I can't help but wonder if III would've been better recieved if Dave or Sammy had sang....something tells me it would have. I think alot of people just got pissed because they yet again, had another singer......When you think about it, look how different musically MWM is, and it was well recieved for the most part.........

Nothing against you at all Kim, but for the sake of NOT derailing this thread to rehash a discussion we just beat to death the past 3 weeks in another thread, I'll just say one more time the hate for VH3 has little to do with path changes and singer changes, it's just majority vote that the song themselves blow cheese. Same lineup with better songs and Dave/Sam fans accept that album with no problems.

I was surprised that they picked OU812 over Balance in all honesty. OU812 sounds like it was recorded underwater. Very muddy production! It sounds very dated now too.

I think the most telling fact about VHIII is that the band themselves, including Gary, don't speak of the album highly. They all pretend that it never happened. If they were proud of what they put out, they would put something from it on GH packages or at least play a song from it here or there. But they don't.

Fair Warning was not a barn burner in the sales department either (in comparison to VH1, 1984, etc.) yet many fans and critics feel that it is Van Halen at their best.

Just goes to show that Michael Anthony is the most important member of Van Halen. He only played on three songs on VHIII and had nothing to do with the three tracks on BOBW, and both suck. Coincidence? I think not!
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

I guess the only way you can change singers for a 3rd time and still call the band by the same name is if you go on youtube and find a Filipino dude that can sing exactly like one of the previous singers

I enjoyed III especially becuase of the local connection, but lets face it, they should have called it The EVH Project Part 1. That way it leaves the door open for ed to fire another singer, and go on to Part 2. By now we'd be at The EVH Project Part 5 with Axl or Rob Thomas singing.
