Default Thailand Intercepts Illegal Arms From North Korea

...allegedly headed for the Middle East. Proud of my boys on this one.

    First Borat and now this.

North Korean arms shipment seized at Don Mueang
    Published: 12/12/2009 at 07:26 PM
    Online news: Local News

Authorities have detained five people who landed in Bangkok in an east European cargo plane full of heavy weapons that originated in North Korea.

"According to my information, the flight originated from North Korea," said Air Force spokesman Capt Montol Suchookorn.

"It was a cargo flight that requested to land at the civilian side of the airport," he said, adding that the Air Force was continuing to guard the aircraft.

The aircraft, an Ilyushin 76 transport registered in Kazakhstan, was travelling from North Korea to Sri Lanka when it asked to land in Bangkok, official investigators said. The final destination of the arms was not known.

Officials found about 35 tonnes of weapons on board and detained four citizens of Kazakhstan and one from Belarus.

The weapons were seized by Thai military offices and transferred to Takhli Air Force base in the central province of Nakhon Sawan.

US officials reportedly tipped off Thai authorities before they found the cache.

An air force official involved in the inspection, who declined to be named, said the Thai authorities had been asked by the United States to investigate the plane and its cargo.

"We were approached by the United States, seeking our cooperation to examine the suspected plane. It came from North Korea and was heading for somewhere in South Asia, probably Pakistan," the official told the Reuters news agency.

But a spokesman for the US Embassy in Bangkok, Michael Turner, said he was unaware of the incident.

North Korea has been hit with fresh United Nations sanctions to punish it for a nuclear test in May. These are aimed at cutting off its arms sales, a vital export item estimated to earn the destitute state more than $1 billion a year.

The plane's pilot requested to land at Don Mueang airport Saturday morning, said government spokesman Panitan Wattanayakorn, and on inspecting the aircraft, authorities found the cache.

"An eastern European airline asked to land this morning at Don Mueang airport to refuel its tank. When Thai authorities examined the aircraft they found a lot of weapons and detained up to five people," Mr Panitan said.

Pol Lt Gen Thangai Prasajaksattru, commander of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), confirmed that five men from eastern Europe had been detained.

"There were a lot of weapons such as rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), missiles and other war weapons," he said.

Air Force spokesman Captain Montol Suchookorn and special branch police said that the chartered cargo plane originated in North Korea's capital Pyongyang.

"According to my information, the flight originated from North Korea. It was a cargo flight that requested to land at the civilian side of the airport," Montol said, adding that the Air Force was continuing to guard the aircraft.

AoT, the airport operator, said Don Mueang airport remained open to passengers. (With Agency reports)

Way to go, Thailand! Score one for the good guys (hopefully). Now, those weapons need to be destroyed properly or else some other ill-intentioned group will get them.

So, where were these weapons headed? Sri Lanka? Why, I wonder? Do these have anything to do with the Sri Lankan government? The Tamil separatists? Hmmm...

"somewhere in South Asia, probably Pakistan", but Al Jazeera has been reporting their ultimate destination as -wait for it - Afghanistan and the
    Middle East.

As for the weapons, you're kind of right twice. Thailand is keeping them for a
pending invasion of Canada and Edmond, OK.

Ha ha ha! Those Cannucks won't know what hit them! Neither will us Okies.

So, I see you got some information on this story from Al Jazeera. It's actually a decent source for news. Mind you, I don't feel it shouldn't be one's primary source, but it's a good augmentation. Perhaps the weapons were bound for Al Jazeera.

It's frickin -40 here, nobody is coming to invade.

And if they did, while they try to figure out why their guns are frozen we shall beat them senseless with hockey sticks.

Then, probably allow them to immigrate and give them benefits.
The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

This next part could really confuse things. Let's stay focused. #asis
