Default My Wolfgang, back from the dead!

I have a trans-amber Peavey Wolfgang Standard that I loved when I first got it, played it constantly, then, after a few years, grew tired of it because it was playing poorly and remanded it to its case. Fast-forward to 3 weeks ago; I take it out of its case, it looks as stunning as the day I first took it home, but it just played like crap! It occured to me that in the entire time i've owned it, I'd NEVER had it properly set up by a pro. There is a Guitar Center near me in Paramus, NJ (for those in the the know, this is the GC on Rt. 17, used to be Victors House Of Music). Anyway, they have a tech there (his name is Eric) who set up my Aerodyne Bass, he's a brilliant guitar tech! Brought him my Wolfie and he worked his magic. As it turned out, aside from the obvious fret work it desperatly needed, it was in dire need of a proper set up, the Floyd was well out of whack, and a couple of saddles needed replacing. I can't recomend this guy enough! This guitar has NEVER playeed as well as it does now & as such has become my #1 once again!
    Anyone have any simular stories?

I've got a Wolfie std. that needs the same treatment. It's a patent pending model, so it's 12 or 13 years old and has never had a refret. In the process of figuring out what size frets I wanna replace the originals with, as I think I've grown to like wider frets than the Wolfie's...

Moral of the story: Do regular set-ups on your guitars. Playing wear and climate take their toll.

I go through every guitar about every 18 months especially the ones that get played the least, so I am pretty much on top of them. My friend Mike that owns the shop I hang in swears that Fender is not using top quality fret wire these days as he says he never had to dress the frets on so many Strats and Teles that are two years old or less. I dont know how true this is but any Fender I have played hard that has been made since 2000 does always need a fret dress in that time frame, as there are always grooves in the frets in the positions I work the hardest.

I had learned a tip years ago that might help some guys out that dont clean off there strings this way. When I wipe down my stings I slacken them a bit and then pinch them in a cloth where I have the top and the bottom of the string and then go up and down from the end of the fret board to the nut. This gets the grime off the underneath of the string that builds up and cuts into your frets. Try this way if you dont do it as it will save your frets and always keep your bends smooth. I am surprised at how many guys neglect to wipe down there strings after playing.

i just had mine refretted too. a while back i chucked the peavey tremolo and installed a real floyd rose system on it too.

a properly setup wolf is a joy.
