You have a lot of options for under $1200. What kind of programs are you going to use? If your just using Microsoft Office and the internet you shouldn't even spend half of that.

Agreed. If it's just a homework and Internet machine, go cheap. On the PC side, I recommend a Toshiba. Hands-down the best PC laptops out there. Great product.

I, on the other hand, am completely partial to my MacBook. I use it for creativity purposes - audio and video - and it works great. I'm now a Mac user for life.

I just bought a new vostro from Dell this week....

Dell has some really nice deals now as do most retailers, now is the time to buy for sure...you can get a really good laptop that will handle all the word processing and the internet starting at around 499...its the software that runs up the price so hopefull you already own the software and can just transfer

If you are starting school, I wouldn't wait too long to order online tho, or you may not get what you want in time..laptops are poised to be a huge christmas item this year..although Dell does have a lot of fast ship units now.

Be sure to check and see if your school has any special "deals' through manufacturers. You can get a great deal on hardware and software through "student pricing"

    also surf fatwallet.com and slickdeals.net

I have a question for you then. I keep going back and forth between wanting a Mac and a PC. My desktop is windows. I really want a Mac because I'm going to be using it for Photoshop, Illustrator. Cinema 4D, I-tunes, the internet and microsoft office.

Now the Photoshop, Illustrator and Cinema 4D, I learned how to use on a Mac, so it almost seems silly to get a windows based computer, but when i cost it out with the more advanced memory, hard drive, graphics card, etc, it's either not available on the Mac stuff or it's twice the cost.

I thought about just getting the I Mac desktop which comes with a lot more memory and Ram, but because the hard drive is on the monitor itself, I'm wondering what might happen if I decide in the future that I want a much larger monitor.

Even when I break down the cost of the I Mac desktop and getting a souped up HP, I can save $600-$700 on the HP and still get more out of it.

    I'm so confused.

Glad you brought this up, Rebel. There are a lot of excellent deals on computers and software for students. Some of those deals are ridiculous.

Joey, if you're going PC, I'm still gonna recommend that Toshiba.

Hey, Naked Wake. This is why I like my Mac --
    1. It's like a nice car: it looks great, it feels great, it works great. I'm at the point in my life where I'm about quality, not quantity. I've never had any sort of "blue screen of death" and my iMac has frozen up on me once in two years.
    2. It's quick.
    3. The basic OS is not a sluggish Windows. I can run Windows on it if I want to, and I do (to take advantage of some apps that aren't made for Mac). Windows runs FASTER on a Mac than it does on any PC I've ever seen. I know two people who run Windows Vista on their MacBook as their primary OS.
    4. No viruses yet.

Something about Macs...I just fly on these things. I'm one of the worst Mac disciples there is because my tech knowledge stops at a certain point (I'm tech savvy, but I just don't care). I have a MacBook and an iMac and I love 'em both. I bought a Mac cold and was frustrated for a week until I got a few tips and pointers from a dude at the Apple Store. Everything's been killer since then. I know only one Mac owner that regrets her purchase, but she's never done anything to get "educated" on it.

If you want a PC, get a PC. It's all good, because in the end it's about the results of your hard work. If you want that HP laptop, change your mind and get a Toshiba instead.

Weird how this came up....my Toshiba Satellite has been giving me fits for weeks so I finally broke down and bought an Acer yesterday. Granted, it's a lower one of their models, but all I use it for is interweb and iTunes for the most part....can't beat being under $400 either.

I have 2 Toshiba laptops and love them. Spent about $1000.00 on each one.

You can get some pretty good deals from the Dell Outlet store.

Toshiba or Dell, if you're going the Windows route. And as mentioned, be sure to check with your educational institution to see if they've partnered with any manufacturers on hardware/software deals.

Toshiba. My Satellite A100 has outlived my previous Dell 5150 by far...
