Default need help from those who have a plexi

I recently got a metroamp 100 watt super lead. I love it and hate it at the same time. It's got massive tone but when cranked it creates an extreme amount of hiss. I figure this is the nature of the beast but is there anything I can do to get the hiss under control? Not sure if a noise gate would be the solution. If I can't get it under control I just might sell it because I know it will drive me nuts. Help!

I don't have a plexi but a noise gate hooked up the 4 cable method should work fine.

What is the "four-cable method", if you don't mind explaining? Just wondering if it's something I can use. Thanks.

When you use the 4 cable method you are gating both the preamp and poweramp, you would need a gate with for jacks though,i use the boss ns2 and it works like a charm.

guirat > NS2 "input", then from NS2 "fx/send/out" to input of amp (or any pedals before the amp). Next, amp's fx out/send > NS2 "fx return/in" then from NS2 "output" to amp's fx return/in.
Just experiment, try it in front of the amp,in the effects loop,or the 4 cable method and see what works best for you.hope this helps.

you shouldt be getting that much hiss?did you build the amp or did george at metroamp build it?if you built it,maybe there is some lead dress issues causing you noise..also what are you suing to control the vloume,a ppimv master volume or an attenuator?

George built it. It has a ppimv master volume. I read on the metroamp forum that the hiss is normal. I guess it's not too bad. I did find that certain effect pedals in my chain were causing some of the hiss. The amp does not like the eventide stompbox's ac adapaters. I took those out and the hiss was nowhere as bad. I guess I'm just use to dead quiet amps. If I keep the volume on the amp at a clean setting and use a distortion pedal the hiss is very minimal. But if I crank the volume to 10 and the master volume at a listening level the hiss just starts getting louder.

Get an Alesis 3630 2 channel gate/compressor in the effects chain. It has been great for the 5150 combo which hisses like crazy! The unit costs about $30-60 on ebay in some cases cheaper than stomp box gates. Two uses in one with the compressor as well. IT WILL WORK AND MAKE YOU HAPPY!

I ordered an isp decimator to see if that solves my issue. If not then I'm going to contact george. Thanks for the help.

AN amp that makes a HISS is not right. We had a gig this week-end and my friend was using a Plexi 1959X, it's 100w of pure tone..and we were LOUD as fuck..and no hiss or anything appart from naturally feedback when he was to close to the amp.

Here's what George from metroamp told me:

"Authentic plexi type amps can have more hiss than a typical amp Especially at band levels. The key to how much is almost always the presence control setting.
Set at 10 there will always be considerable hiss, but at about 9 or less the hiss will fall off quite drastically.
Any boost pedals in front of the amp can cause extra hiss as well. Again, this is the nature of the beast."

I do have my presence control at 10 so that probably is my issue. I just dialed everything to 10 to give me that VH tone. I'll back it off and see how it sounds tonight.

Well that all depends. There's alot of high gain amps out there that DO have alot of hiss. The Peavey 5150 had a hell of a lot, though you can reduce a lot by tube choice, Soldano, Rivera, and Engl's also have a fair amount. it's not that there's anything wrong with them, they just have that inherent additional tube preamp noise. I'm with you on plexi, and other classic amps though. I've never owned a Marshall or other amp in that range however, which includes old Hiwatts, that produced excessive hiss; just what you'd expect at extreme levels given their rather sparse preamp sections.
