Default So I decided to mod my wolfgang

I have a Korean Wolfgang that I haven't touched since I got my EBMM Axis, so I decided to mod it. I switched out the neck pickup and replaced it with a GFS Dream 90. Man does this thing sound SWEEEEEEEEEEET. It has a lot more clarity than the original pup. If you play it through some distortion it has a mean growl to it, throw it on a clean channel and it gets chimey, crystal cleans, almost strat like. I had to round off the legs on the pickup and even chip a little bit of wood out of the cavity so it could fit.

Once I took out the neck pickup I saw that it had 2 foam pads glued onto the bottom so it could make contact with the body. I removed the foam out of the bridge pickup and it sounded better to me. Or it could have just been that because I have not played the guitar in so long, that I remembered it sounding bad comparing it to the Axis.

Now for the shitty cellphone picture!

In having owned 24 Wolfgangs and done work on many others, I can say I have never found foam underneath the pickups. It was either put there by a previous owner or is just a stupid EXP thing.

I personally love the sound of the Wolfgang neck pickup. In fact, it's become the standard by which I judge other neck pickups, and the only one I've come to like almost as much is the GFS VEH neck pup.

I put Seymour Duncan Phat Cats in a Wolfgang--SD's P-90 and similar to the GFS Dream 90. They're awesome, of course. When I want an old school rock tone that needs to be dialed back just a touch from the typical humbucker tone, I call on the Phat Cat Wolf.

the GFS Dream 90's are cool but the phat cats have more bite.

    Me neither.
It is very common on the OLP's though.
    Maybe it's an OLP pickup?

Usually the foam serves to help raise the pickup ...
If the foam was removed and there was no difference in height, I really don't see the point.

Weird about the foam... I've worked on 4 or 5 different OLP's and none of them had foam, although I've heard some of them have the foam under the pickups instead of springs around the pickup screws, (to hold the pickup to the correct height.) That seems to me like the biggest cheap out you can possibly think of... save about $0.001 on 2 springs and use foam instead

One other option could be that someone added it, like AT said. I remember a guitar player I know going on and on about how his Ibanez sounded so much heavier and "more metal" because he stuffed foam in under the pickups. If I'm remembering correctly, I think he was trying to convince me that the foam made it so he could play on stage as loud as he 'liked and needed to play' and the pickups wouldn't start vibrating around excessively due to the extreme metal volume levels

I can't remember if the music man guitars have foam under the pickups.

Last time i looked under the neck pickup was in 1993 when i turned it around like Eddie did.

Why did he do that btw?

Then i remember in 1996 the pv wolfgang's came out with them already turned around.

People claim that the Dimarzio's in the neck sound warmer when flipped. (Same goes for the Air Norton apparently).

i didn't get a real amp - 5150 - till 1995 and by that time i had already flipped the pickup around.

I hadn't ever heard that. So when Ed flipped the pickup in his EBMM, what side were the adjustable pole pieces on? Anyone have any photos comparing before and after?

look at any pic of eddie with a music man from 1991-1993.
the neck pickup is in the original position.

In 1993 at some point he flipped it and thats how the wolfgangs all were.

Well, holy crud, I never noticed that before.

That's how I've got the Air Norton in the Wolfgang placed already.

Thanks! That was a parts-Wolf. I put it together just as an excuse to install those pickups.

Also, regarding the EVH photos... He's got a D-Tuna on the EBMM in both pics. I know he was using one before he bought the patent, but when exactly did he start using it? Was it on the FUCK tour?

    cool.

that top pic is from the right here right now tour, 1993.

never saw a d-tuna on his guitar in 1991/92.

think he started using them in 1993.

also he stuck the "5150" on his main ebmm while vh was in europe in 93.

Every Wolf EXP that I disassembled had the foam glued to the back of the pickups.
