Default Coming 12/18/2009: James Cameron's "AVATAR"

The trailer for Cameron's AVATAR appeared last evening on FOX during an episode of House. It sort of looks cool and is fairly stunning in places, even though the plot appears to be somewhat predictable. Don't you hate it when a trailer pretty much outlines the entire content of the film it is advertising?

This is the first trailer that didn't make the movie look completely unwatchable.

It still doesn't look that interesting, though after Alien, True Lies, Terminator 1 and 2, and Titanic, I guess you have to give it a chance.

    Default AVATAR

I think it looks amazing. Somehow James Cameron always make me think that when he decide to do a film that many have said that it was impossible, he always made then eat their words.
The film looks fantastic can't wait.

I feel like I've already seen the movie now, after just four minutes. Perhaps the makers of such formulaic stuff feel that any plot is unimportant (in these kinds of films it generally is) so now they tell you the whole story and hint at some of the better special effects.

There was enough corn in the trailer alone to feed a large village for some time.

It "looks" fantastic, but it looks like utter shit.

Got around to seeing it this morning at the local IMAX in 3D.

I echo and agree with a lot of what many people have said about the flick pro and con. It's an amazing *technological* achievement, beautifully designed, a real triumph of art and technology at a small expense to story which has nicked and cobbled together some pretty obvious ideas from well kown older mainstream sources. Regarding the whole Dances with Lion King syrupy "circle of life" stuff - it does get a bit annoying and contrived at times. And there's a couple major gaps in the plot that *should* have resulted in a pretty abrupt end to the movie (why not just nuke 'em from orbit?) but oh well. I was going in expecting close to video game level artificial looking CGI and that's there in large doses, but about 15 minutes into the flick, you get lost in the whole thing and it doesn't matter. Seeing it in 3D is a major reason for the ease the viewer slips into the "world" of the movie.

Still the overall package is a pretty amazing 2 1/2 hour experience. After seeing it in 3D, I can't imagine seeing it again at least in a theater in 2D. It's be like hearing a full surround film soundtrack in mono.

It's funny, but I was really reminded of the first time I saw the original Star Wars during it's opening weekend in that the story wasn't really too original but after seeing it, my impression was that the film itself was a game-changer. Same to a lesser extent with Jurassic Park. I'm sure a lot of people in the 30's and 50's thought the same thing about King Kong, The Wizard Of Oz and/or the Ten Commandments.

I really think the one big thing about this movie is that it will push more live action films of a wider variety than just CGI sci-fi stuff or gimmicky horror movies to be presented in 3D in addition to the mainly CGI animated fare. Avatar proves that there's a big audience who will tolerate sitting through a long movie wearing those goofy glasses. I think the technology has a long ways to go, but this is still a major step towards truly immersive, commonplace 3D moviegoing experience. As the hardware for filming and exhibition cost drops, it's going to be much like introducing stereo or multi-channel sound into cinemas in that it will become fairly mainstream for even low budget independent films.

Another perhaps unexpected benefit for the entertainment industry is 3D is really a unique form of copyguard in that people who bootleg movies in the theater with a camcorder just won't get anything usable from the unfiltered
3D image on the screen. But then again, there's always some theaters showing 2D versions of (the) movie so perhaps that point's kinda moot.

I'm holding my breathe for 3D interactive home theater porn right outta "Brainstorm," the 80's movie with Christopher Walken.

I went and saw it the second day it was out. Yes, the story line is very predictable, but yes the movie was friggin outstanding and a top 5 theater experience in 3D. I didn't do Imax, but I might go see it again there. ...and I never see a movie twice in the theater.

Seeing the trailer reminds me of Pocahontas. The invaders of a new land looking to wipe out the locals and get the prize gold/mineral with John Smith turning tail.

The circle of life stuff isnt corny. It's vitally relevant, more so now than ever. Whatever ecosystem you live within, you have to give back what you take and have respect for the land.

Looks amazing and I want to see it. The effects in this look fantastic!!

Just saw it, it sucked in my opinion. Predictable and cheesy lines killed it for me. Nice effects though.

Cameron should hire Quentin Tarantino for his dialogue.

I liked the character development of the female alien in particular. Half way through the movie I found myself wanting to spank that fine blue ass.

    Just got back.

The most awe-inspiring film I have ever seen.

    It's a work of art.

Sets the bar incredibly high for ANY movie that comes out from here on out.
Not just for fantasy movies either. I mean for ANY genre. This movie is TRUE, HONEST and GENUINE.

It makes you think about the world you are living in. At least that's how I feel.
My man, when you are fantasizing, don't go for attainable, you can get attainable at the local Applebee's. - Dave's Dreidel

Not sure why you'd think so. I haven't seen a James Cameron film yet that has disappointed me. Hell, I even liked Titanic.

Avatar was visually spectacular, well-acted, and even though the story was paper-thin and super-predictable, I still didnt leave my seat once in the whole three hours.

If I were to trash any of the "big" holiday films, it would be Sherlock Holmes. Far too long and took itself a little too seriously.
