Default Now Here's A Tough One. Whos Got The Answer?

A client of mine has this 82 oor 83 Ibanez Artist series. Badass guitar. Solid Mohogany, Black and naturally reliced.
He wants it brought back to when he got it when he was 15. Easy fix but, the bottons and shafts come right out of the machineheads. He even lost one.
Why do they just pop out? Give it a guess.

It looks as though the button and shaft piece screws into the gear on the inside of the tuner housing.

Simichrome polish will clean those things up. How you'll replace one of them... I don't know.

I have a '78 ibanez Iceman. The pegs look similar but they seem to be missing a tightening nut, and have a standard washer where the original nut (or whatever it's actually called) should be.

That tightening nut actually came with a special little tool so you could tighten your pegs so they'd stay in tune. Or at least that was my understanding of how that worked.

I don't know how many years Ibanez continued to use this feature (it didn't work any better than regular pegs).

Most of us upgraded to nice schallers, I know that doesn't help, but it's the truth.

I would either e-mail Ibanez directly or a guitar shop that specializes in classic Ibanez model repair and upgrades.

Ok. Hear's the answer. And It blew mw away.
I remember back in the machine shop days that worm gears, under tention, would lock in place.
Once you give the string post tention from the strings pullin, the dont budge.
But since ones missin, I may have to upgrade to Schallers anyway.

    Model AR-50Bk

What are the two numbers after the 1st letter J in the serial number.
    J??xxxx

Did a little looking..I think that the 2nd and 3rd number in the serial # represents the year. Either way this is the model it is.

    some specs on it:
    Body Mahogany
    Top Carved Maple
    Neck Birch 3ply
    Machine Head Velvetune
    Pickups Super 70 no covers
    Controls 2 volume,2 tone,3 way toggle
    Bridge Gibraltar
    Tailpiece Quik Change
    Hardware Chrome

Is the super 70 what Ed had in his shark??

I wouldn't refinish it, if it were mine.
It could possibly decrease the collector value significantly.
Not to mention all the "mojo".

    I agree with this post.
Its a real nice axe. Tons of mojo. Has that "classic" feel and look.

I had a bar patron try to make fun of the "Ibanez" I was playing. It's actually a Carvin kit. I'm not partial to Ibanez guitars, with the exception of the Les Pauls from the 70s.
