    Default Solid spalt build

This is going to be an interesting build. I was able to salvage a large thick piece of spalted maple locally and turned it into a book matched body. I had my finish guy do a caramel burst so you could still see the grain through. What is not know is how it is going to sound ?? The mystery remains until it is finished. It has the weight of Alder. Not that heavy after sitting around on the ground. That is what makes maple spalt. Decay. I have never even seen a body out of solid spalt. Mainly because Nobody can buy it that big. I am working on the neck in between customer projects but it is curly maple with a Brazilian rosewood fretboard that is graphite reinforced.

I'm not usually a fan of spalt, but that looks awesome bookmatched! My guess is that the spalted areas may take a little edge of the usually ultra bright maple. Especially as your pivots are right on the larger spalted area. At any rate man, it looks just fantastic. Hope it all works out to your expectations. Keep us well informed!!!!

Guitar looks great man. Spalted maple is pretty soft so I would be careful of the posts for your trem. Cant wait to see the final product!

Looks fantastic as always Scott! I really wonder how this one will sound.

(By the way, I just mounted the tuners, nut, and floyd on the guitar you built the neck for -- I've found that everything on the neck has been perfectly machined/measured out so far!)

Scott, that looks fantastic. Some day when I've got some money to spend I'll be hitting you up for at least a body...

Looks cool, but I am in the concerned club with things like trem mounts, etc. But I think you probably know what you're doing, so I will now shut up.

No concerns actually. this piece is not that soft as people might assume. Not all spalt is "soft". No issues with trem posts at all. If it were soft there are ways to strengthen the wood around like thin epoxy or you can impregnate soft woods too, but not the case with this one wich is why I used it. It was a rare opportunity to use it for a solid body. I was originally going to re-saw the slab into book matchced tops but changed my mind when I realized it was thick enough after splitting it for a solid book match. Another key is using the inserts and NOT the old screw in posts. I never use the old style screw in posts. I know that some of the guys are using it on the franky builds, but that is obviously for replication purposes. The old screw in type work there way out if used heavily.
