Default MRJ Signature Guitar (In Progress)

I know, I know, claiming that I have a signature guitar is ridiculous

BUT... I've been building guitars for myself and clients for quite a while now, and I finally decided to go all out, and make the 'perfect' guitar for me. Everything in this guitar has been selected carefully using my own trial and error experiences having to do with what I like in a guitar, and what I don't.

Here are some pic's of my progress so far:

The last 3 pictures are of the neck, before it was shipped to me. It was made custom for me by Scott Fletcher here on the links. The specs are similar to a Peavey Wolfgang neck. I think Scott's incredible work speaks for itself, but let me tell you, his stuff is the highest quality you can get. I mean, look at that birdseye!

It's still rough, and I'm prototyping, but it's coming together pretty quickly.

Yep, I did the body from scratch. The only thing I don't make/assemble on my custom guitars are the necks. I just don't have the $$$ to get all the tooling I'd need to make them, and it wouldn't really be worth it anyway since I don't make many guitars a year.

Awesome. What a beautiful neck/fret board. dig the body style too and headstock.

My eyes got wide seeing the first pic with the uncut block for a headstock. lmao!! For a moment I thought...wtf!
Reminded me of Bo Diddley but in reverse. lol

Very cool. I'll look forward to seeing the finished product.

What body wood? Are you going with basswood and maple?

    Neat body shape, as well.

Haha, no man, I finished the headstock. I had Scott just leave it as a paddle so I could decide what shape to cut out after I got it.

Yes. I forgot to give the spec's.

The body is Basswood from exotic woods (meaning it is generally lighter and has a little more 'bounce' than the harder basswood that feels more like alder), and the top is 1/4" flame (slightly) maple. The body is a little thicker than your average 1.75" guitar body.

The neck is hard maple with a birdseye fingerboard. Radius of 15", asymmetrical profile like the Peavey Wolfgang, internal graphite reinforcement rods, stainless steel frets, 1 5/8" nut.

Wow, you're on your way! Another interesting combination.

Reminds me a little of EBMMs Steve Morse body, but with a Wolf-style headstock. (I'm not saying that's what you were aiming for, I'm just saying it looks cool)

Ya, they are similar. After I made it I realized that it was close to the Morse and petrucci models, but with a more asymmetrical shape.

The headstock is kinda a mix of a Wolfgang and a HP special.

Well, I've been super busy and I haven't been able to do much guitar building work lately, but I have been slowly but surely getting some stuff done. I've now been using my first "signature guitar" as my main guitar for quite a while -- over a year now, even though it's hasn't been finished. Everything on it is done, except final sanding, the binding, staining, and clear coating. It actually looks kinda cool as a natural finished guitar.... I'm tempted to leave it that way.... that's a custom Scott Fletcher neck on there (look at that birdseye!!)

And recently, I've begun building "MRJ Signature Guitar" #2.

This pic is old -- I've got about 80% of the body routing and shaping done now. This incarnation of the MRJ will be a stripped-down version; one humbucker, slightly slimmer neck profile, no maple cap or binding, etc. The neck on this guitar will also be a Scott Fletcher custom, made to spec. This time I ordered the neck with his Jet City Guitars standard headstock shape on it.

Here you can see the neck with a light coat of poly finish on it. I took a shot at making a custom headstock label, just to see if I could get it looking 'factory' finished. I'm fairly happy with the result! Yay for commercial grade lazer printers!

I'll post some more pics and some video clips of these 2 guitars once I get more done...
