Default Noisy clothes dryer, its driving me crazy.

    Hello fellow linkers,

I hope this post finds all of you doing well.

My clothes dryer makes this squeaking noise from time to time. Its started out as just occasionally but NOW its doing it during 83.7% of the cycle.

Anyone have any ideas what it could be. I hate to call a repair guy to come and install a $3 part and charge me $150 for the service call.

Have a enjoyable night. Dance, eat cheese, have a slurpy.

How accurate is that 83.7% number?
    It could be important.

Check the capacity for what you are drying. There is a possibility that you could be overloading the machine. I'm not kidding about this, as I found out through trial and error the device's capabilities. For instance, throwing in your work-boots along with any bedding is a bad idea. It seems to put a strain upon the motor.

Be certain to see if you are overloading the machine. Try some "dry runs" with lesser loads. There is a chance that you are overloading the device's capacity, and you will be able to meter this by slowly going through things in steps.

A clothes dryer is super easy to work on, once you crawl behind it. That part's not so easy.

Anyway, set it to no-heat drying, turn it on, and get behind it.
Near the bottom back corner, you should find a small access panel you can take off. (It probably has a couple of screws.)

Inside, you should see a set of pulley-looking wheels that the drum belt is threaded through.
I'll bet you a nickel that the squeaking sound is coming from one of those wheels, or a piece of the wheel thing is rubbing against the drum as it turns.

If so, you'll probably have to replace the whole thing, it doesn't come apart. It doesn't cost much, maybe $20 or so. (It's called a "belt-tensioner" if I remember correctly.)
Write down the make and model of your dryer, and look through the yellow pages for an appliance part store in town.
It's not a bad idea to put on a new belt at the same time.

Like I said, it's a super easy fix. If you can change a guitar string, you can do this.

Here is a link with some pictures.

Edit: That's a bad link, I think. Trythis one.

Dude, I feel your pain. I just got rid of a P.O.S. dryer that was doing the same thing. Now the one we just got is starting to do some squeaking (17.4 percent of the cycle). I agree with Bullwinkle that these are not complicated machines and easy to figure out once you pop that panel off. I just don't want to fuck with it and tend to lean towards just buying another one.

Chef & Bullwinkle have valid points. The key is to determine what is actually squeaking. Is the noise coming from the front or the back? Is it constant once it starts or intermittent? Does it start immediately & taper off or start after running a bit?

I've seen the bearing the back of the drum rides on go out & do sort of the same thing. Also had problems w/ the lint blower impeller getting into the cage & making a heckuva racket.

In any case, a dryer is a pitifully simple machine & any guy w/ one eye & half a brain should be able to take one apart w/ ease.

Make sure you unplug it first. 220 V 40amp service will bake your noodle.

I had that same problem with my old gas dryer. It was one of the wheels on the pulley assembly that spins the drum. I sprayed a little silicon grease on it and the squeak went away.

Can someone please put T.J. in a dryer and leave him in there. WTF
I used to jog but the ice cubes kept falling out of my glass.

Keep it a secret, though. My wife thinks I'm a mechanical genius because I can repair the dryer.

When we bought our house, it came with an ancient old dryer. We thought we'd have to spring for a new one, but I kept repairing it and we got twelve more years out of it.

Eventually it got so old that the electrical wires started corroding and falling apart. I kept splicing it together with any spare pieces of wire I had around the house. It would run for a month or two and then the wires would fall apart again and I would splice more wire on.

One day, I decided to stop messing around with all of this wire shit and I connected two parts together with the wire from my barbecue starter. (It's not really a "wire", more like a hunk of copper about 1/8" thick and 6" long)
I clamped it together, started up the dryer and left the room.

About two minutes later, there was a bright blue spark and a *KAPOW!!!!*
I looked back into the laundry room and there was a big, black burn mark across the control panel. There was also a little smoke hanging in the air. Needless to say, the dryer wasn't running any more.

That's when I finally broke down and bought a new one. It seemed like the right thing to do.

I have always found that Sledgehammers do a great job when it comes to silencing squeeks. A few swings and the dryer won't be squeeking (or doing anything else) again!

Make sure though, when the blue lights are flashing on your lawn, if one of the officers with a gun trained on your chest turns out to be female, DO NOT say "Hey there cupcake. You want a glass of absinthe?"

This will not fix the problem.

Possibilities ranked by likelihood (and ease of repair):

    1. Load too heavy.
    2. Pulleys / Belt
    3. Bearings around front door (assuming front-loader). Basically thin pieces of graphite to reduce friction
    4. Main bearing in back.

The first three you can easily handle, the fourth depends on your level of mechanical comfort. Having a repairman perform any of these repairs will cost nearly as much as purchasing a new sock-eater, unless you have a home warranty. If you can get the make/model, finding a manual or photos online should be relatively simple.
