    Marathons

A friend of mine invited me to join her in running (actually walking in our case) the Indy 500 Mini-Marathon.

I'm really excited. Anyone ever done one of these before, and can give me tips? Like, how am I going to go from walking 2 miles, 3X a week, to 13 miles, all in the span of 3.5 hours? The race is in May.

Also, what type of shoes do I need?

The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

    Dang, that's sweet, Duke.

I think they televise it...bits and pieces. Apparently everybody starts in "corrals". The African dudes, then the rest of the runners. LOL. The back corrals are for the walkers, with the "Double Z" corral in the very back reserved for the middle-age ladies.

My wife's a Marathoner. You have a lot of work to do. Check out the beginners forums on Runnersworld.com. That should get you started. You need an agenda that keeps you running just about every other day that builds up stamina and increases over time. Good luck. Running is not my thing, but I have been around it long enough to know that runners are some of the most dedicated people I know and truly love their sport.

I'm no expert, but I think you just need to go faster for longer.

I started to run this year and while I have done any half marathons, have done some 6 mile runs. You can look at all the formulas you want but the fact is that you need to build up your endurance. Right now you are walking 3 times a week. Change that to jogging 3 times a week and start increasing your distance by adding .25/mile per week. Once you get up to around 3 or 4 miles then start looking into how to train for a marathon.

You need to set small goals. I remember when I couldn't run 1.5 miles and now I do it faster than what I did when I was in the military 18 years ago.

Sounds like a story problem. I always sucked at those.

    Re: Shoes.

Get a good pair. Go to a place like The Running Co. in Fishers where they can put you on a treadmill and check how your feet work. If you try to put in 13 miles with a pair of shoes that don't give you the right kind of support, you can seriously hurt yourself.
You'll probably spend a hundred bucks or more, but it's worth it.

I have friends who have done the Mini, and they love it. I wish I could, but I don't have the knees for it any more.
I used to run distance when I was younger. Then I took up smoking. (Dumb, dumb, dumb!) During my smoking years, I tore up both of my knees in two separate accidents.
When I quit smoking, I started running again. I was working up to a 5k run last year. One night, one of my knees went *pop*! Not a good feeling. My options became: 1) Have knee surgery, or 2) take up bicycling. I chose #2.

Have fun! Remember, the first two miles, you will feel like you are going to die. Then the endorphins kick in and you will be able to do five more easily. Just get through the first two or so.

I'll be walking the marathon. Ziggy, I would love to run it, but unfortunately, and I hate to admit it, but my knees can't take running anymore. I can't imagine running 6 miles, let alone 13 or 26.

Right now, walking is a breeze. I can walk 2-3 miles without even panting (or whatever they call it...lol.) So, I run a little bit intermittenly, just to get my heart rate and cardio up, then walk again.

I appreciate your feedback about small goals. My first inclination is just to go all out, but I'll probably injure myself that way. Apparently participants in the marathon get a sample training schedule.

So Bullwinkle, you live in Indy? Thanks for the feedback. I don't know if I'll need running or walking shoes. I guess they'll tell me. I just hate walking shoes. They're heavy, and look like something Grandma would wear. Right now, I just wear a pair of cross-trainers.

Sucks gettin' old, don't it? My husband has a stationary bike, and I've used that. Don't like it, but it does build up your endurance like a mutha. Also makes your thighs hard as tree trunks. And I'm not really into having tree trunk thighs. Oh, well....
