Default 24 Frets Vs. 22 Frets

Which is the best in your opinion?

What are the pros and cons?

I want to start a new build and was curious what you guys thought about the differences between a 24 fret neck vs a 22 fret neck.

i have all 3, but if i'm honest i never use the frets past 22 anyway, so i would go with 22, and if i'm really honest i rarely need 22, if i'm short of a fret on a 21 fret guitar i just bend that little bit more. so my opinion would be 22!

I have 21,22 & 24 as well. Rarely use past the 22nd. 24 frets are really getting thin and of coarse there are access issues, depending on the guitar.

My Carvin DC400 has 24 frets but has plenty of cutaway and a neck thru/smooth heel.

Can't see myself ever buying another guitar with 24 thou...

me either, my Gibson MIII has 24 and great access but the only song in our set that requires 24 frets is Steve Vai's "for the love of god" and we don't always play that so 24 frets isn't always nessersary for me.

Question for the builders - does having 24 frets effect the tone of the guitar (good or bad) in any way?

i cant see it having any major effect over 21 or 22, although i'd have thought that the scale would preferably always be 25.5, which some people might not like (Les Paul players in particular)

no experience here but i have heard some players say they dont like the way the neck humbucker position sounds because of the position that the 24 fret neck puts it.

I've got 22 and 24 fret necks. I like the idea of the 24 fret neck, having 2 octaves there, but I find the real estate gets real cramped above the 15th fret, so I prefer 22. There is a noticeable difference in terms of finger space and access on a 22 fret neck.

the 24 fret neck on the ibanez jem is nice, the last 4 being scalloped makes it easier.

    I have guitars with 21, 22, and 24.

I'd likely go with 22 for a custom axe for myself but 24 would be cool too. 24 is nice. I love the option of having a little more range but it's not really needed often. 2 of my Jems have the last few frets scalloped and one doesn't. Either way they are easy enough to play on. Depends on your fingers. I have big hands but my fingers aren't so thick that those little frets are useless. I have friends that are players where there is no way they could utilize them comfortably with their wide fingers.

I never heard about a huge effect in tone cause of two additional frets.
From my experience that isn't an issue.

Goodluck with your build. Show it to us when it's done.
