Finished my Frankie.....for now. (big pics inside)

So painting this up has been my first real EVH replica. I've striped up guitars before, but never taken this much care in it. I had done a TON of research on the 5150 a few years back (I made that multi-colored template that I see posted everywhere), but never got around to making one. After building two super-strats, I realized I had enough spare parts lying around to build another guitar. All I needed was the body and maybe a pickup or two....

So enter KNE & the Seymour Duncan IM1. I was planning on doing a replica of the Frankie as it is today (minus the accidental blue paint, not a fan of that), but ended up pinstriping it up and sticking with the black and white. I'll probably leave it like this for a few months, and then disassemble it and paint it red.

The plan was for the neck single coil to be functional, so I had to carry that out in this version of the guitar too. That's why there's a regular strat pickguard on it that I EVH'd to fit both of those pups. All of the relicing was done when I thought I was still painting red, so yes, those "paint pulled up the tape" spots are there when they shouldn't be.

Here she is with my main build...

    All (W)Fired Up...

And some of the relicing... (pre pinstriping)

    Good work!!

Now... how does she sound and play?

I admire the work and passion y'all put into making these replica/tribute axes... an art in and of itself. But is it something that inspires you to play, create and jam your ass off...?

Yup. Playing one of these replicas does not mean that you are limited to exclusively playing Van Halen songs on them!

I would hope not... I'm an old time EVH/Van Halen fan, but other than a few tabs and fartin around, I've had no desire to learn or perform a VH cover tune. I've mostly been intrigued by Ed's approach to the instrument and composing style.

I guess that's why I haven't had a desire to build an EVH replica... although I have a black Epiphone Peewee V I bought for my son 10 years ago, that I've thought of striping for the hell of it. But beyond that I build guitars to play first and look good second...

Well, what better way is there to understand Ed's "approach to the instrument and composing style" than to actually learn one his songs?

Goes without saying, playability/sound has to be the priority, appearance is secondary.

    me too.
last saturday with my band i played the whole set with my b/w frankie tribute guitar (basically the same i just did my own stripe pattern)...not because our set is full of VH covers, but because its an incredibly playable guitar that sounds and plays GREAT...that to me is paramount.

Yeah, there's a reason why I was making this with a functional single coil in the neck. Just one pup doesn't cover the range of music I play. I'll be playing this guitar for one song at a Haloween gig, but it won't be for a VH song...

And she plays okay right now. I haven't had the time to intonate her yet. I need to file a few frets down too. The action's good though, and the neck is straight, so she'll play nicely by Haloween.
