Default 5150 head , Powering down problem....

    hey guys a question......

    i have a 2003 5150 markI head. i am the original owner.

just recently this started..... when i turn the amp off to half power , i.e. turning off the power switch but leaving it on standby , the standby light goes off with the full power light.

also when i turn off the stand by and the amp is shutting completely off theres a slight "pop" in the speakers as the power fully shuts off.

the cab is a 4x12 mono 16 ohms and i am using a monster cable speaker cable.

the amp sounds fine while playing , just worried every time i turn it on and off at band practice. any clues ?

Rick it's that crazy metal shit you play man, it's melting the fucking amp!

Seriously though, I once ran my amp on a 16 OHM cab at club that had a house cab, and it did do the pop thing when I turned it off. It never does it on my 8 OHM Marshall, nor the 4 OHM cab that they have at our rehearsal studio. So perhaps it's not a big deal.

Are you saying that when you power down and leave it on Standby, both lights go off right?

If you turn off the power switch first (farthest one to the right), it will pop slightly, and it goes completely off. To put it in standby mode, just turn the standby switch to 'standby' (off). Unless I'm not understanding what you wrote...

I know I was too, that's why I asked for a confirmation. If you turn the power off, all the lights go off, it doesn't matter what the Standby is on.

Yep. It won't hurt anything shutting down like that either. I'm more worried about if you leave the standby on all the time, and you start it up like that. That's hitting your tubes with a lot of juice when they are still cold, and will start eating at how long they last pretty quickly.

heres how i turn off the amp.

i turn off the power switch then the red light turns off.

after a minute i turn off stand by green light goes off.

both switches are now turned off.

now when i turn off power switch both lights fade out but the standby is still on and its still in stand by mode. then after i turn off standby switch it fades off the goes a tiny "pop".
i could switch to 8 ohms into a 16 ohms but the cab seems punchier when i run the amp at 16 ohm.

BTW heres how i power up......
turn on power switch...red light wait few minutes
then turn on stand by..green light and amp fades up to full volume.

have i been doing power up and power down the wrong way ? smacks head!

Dude, to power your amp down you need to FIRST switch it to standby mode, THEN turn the power off. Don't do the reverse!

Yes, ALWAYS power the amp up in standby mode, and ALWAYS power the amp down in standby mode. Start doing it that way now and see if everything is okay with your amp. Some of our more technical guys will be able to help you determine if you've done any harm to the output transformer or otherwise.

hmmmmm , ok lets just clarify , see if i'd be doing this right.

    1. get to practice or show.

    2. set up amp , connect all cables ect.

    3. flip on power switch -red light comes on...wait a minute or two.

    4. flip on standby switch - green light comes on, both switches in on position..amp volume comes on full volume.

    5. play , jam , practice , ect. while both the power and stand by switches are flipped up/on...green and red lights both on.

    6. done playing....turn off the standby switch..wait a minute...then turn off power switch.

    correct?

    Exactly.

One thing you mentioned that I always emphasize is PLUG IN ALL SPEAKER CABLES before plugging the amp into the wall power and turning it on. Then you never have the chance of powering up with no load, and frying your output transformer, power tubes, etc (basically your entire amp).

Yes you now have it right.

Not to point out more of the obvious but...

Also.. I'll put it on standby(by putting the standby switch on Standby and not ON) when taking breaks etc while leaving the power switch ON. At a gig or rehearsal the power stays on and the standby switch is only set to ON when I'm using the amp...otherwise it's on standby with the power on. Then yes when done and ready to break gear down, put on standby, turn power off...then unplug from wall, then unplug the speaker cabinet(s).

The 5150's are pretty damn durable. I doubt you did damage to it but now you know the deal. Best of luck.

Oh make sure you have the Ohms setting right to match the cabinet(s) you are using also.

yeah the 5150 is a tank amp head. ive made mistakes with it before hooking up cables on a dark stage and it never fizzed or freaked out just had low volume. then worked fine after setting the cables right.
also i always make sure to have the speaker cable hooked up before turning anything on yes.

OK last question so i can reserve all this to memory. i might tape this to my forehead for a week.

During a break , turn the standby switch into the down position( the green light goes off) and only the power is in the up/on position and then just red light is on ?

thanks for the help guys , highly appreciated.
