Default Hey, Let's Celebrate the Deaths of 1000 People With A Cruise!

For the 100th Anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic some company is plannig a cruise that retraces the doomed liner's route:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/e...re/8296262.stm

A holiday company is to retrace the voyage of the Titanic as part of the 100th anniversary of the disaster.

The 12-night cruise, with tickets priced from £2,595, will follow the route of the ill-fated ship which sank in April 1912 killing 1,517 people.

HM Balmoral will depart Southampton on 8 April 2012, bound for New York, and will pass the point where the Titanic sank when it hit an iceberg.

Historian David Lawrence said the disaster still "fascinated" people.

The liner sank after hitting an iceberg in the Atlantic on its maiden voyage on 15 April 1912, killing 1,517 of the 2,223 people on board.

Millvina Dean, the last survivor of the disaster, who was nine weeks old at the time, died in Southampton in May aged 97.

    'Bit gory'

The cruise will pass Cherbourg on the French coast before calling at the Irish port of Cobh, as the original ship did.

It will then sail across the Atlantic, arriving at the Titanic site on April 14/15 where a memorial service will be held.

Millvina Dean was nine weeks old when the Titanic sank
The voyage will then continue to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where many of those who died are buried, before sailing on to New York, the final destination.

Mr Lawrence, president of the Nomadic Preservation Society, said a first class ticket in 1912, with a private balcony, would have cost about £4,500.

"Third class passengers would have a weekly wage of £1. It was a one-way trip for them with a ticket between £500 and £600, a one-way ticket to the new world and they would have sold most of their belongings," he added.

"There are going to be people who will say its a bit gory. The cruise itself is going to be an historical thing, to be able to retrace their steps, but they should do it in a respectable way, remembering the people.

"It's a very fascinating subject, everyone remembers it."
I hope the First Mate has a high-powered rifle just to blast the turkeys who stand on the bow and yell "I'm the King of the world".

not as tasteless as the Titanic themed water slide that you can rent for your family picnic

hey kids! lets pretend that we are all sliding to our watery graves!

I think it comes with blue body paint to get that really festive frozen dead body look.

they were going to put one up in our town during a festival, but someone I know from Nova Scotia had to point out just how tasteless it was.

Oh, I don't know. I kinda like the idea of playing Kate Winslet, while Leo does sketches of me.

Yeah, this makes about as much sense as White Star Line originally wanting to transfer the survivors from Titanic to RMS Olympic, Titanic's sister ship and in many ways almost the same exact ship. Sure, that's what I'd want, to get on a ship that's nearly identical to the one that just sank from under me.

    Titanic

    Olympic

Then again, there were plenty of dimwits that wanted to build an exact replica of Titanic shortly after the DeCrapio movie came out....yeah, that was a real bright idea.

I think if they do it in a respectable way it's not such a bad idea.

Now if they turn it into a Disney Cruise, than that's wrong.

But it's basically a 12 day TOUR. How is it any different than Civil War Re-enactments or tours of historical sites where countless deaths took place.

Who's celebrating though, that's what I'd like to know? Who's celebrating the deaths of 1000 people?

I'd actually love to take this cruise. France, Ireland, England, New York -- with a bit of history thrown in. It's not a celebration, it's an historical archive.

Then again, I viisited Lakehurst, New Jersey (site of the Hindenburg disaster) and Three-Mile Island (great souvenir missile silo mugs)...

Yeah, I wouldn't mind seeing those places....wouldn't even mind visiting Belfast and seeing what remains of the parts of Harland & Wolffe shipyard where Titanic and her sisters were built.

It just seems like bad taste to me.

There's no city bar-b-q in Chicago to remember the great fire. They don't have paper airplane contests at ground zero. Oakland isn't planning to commemerate the Cyrpess Freeway collapse with a Shake & Bake chicken night.

I really don't care, I just don't see how this moves the ball forward for mankind. Why not raise money to teach poor kids to swim or something productive?
