Oh, yeah! It does save money in the long run on his twice-yearly examinations and vaccinations, and according to the statement yesterday my fee would've been $301.32 without it vs. the $231.51 that it was with it. Still, I'm not signing off on national healthcare until dogs are covered, too!

    So, you saved about $80.

    What are your premiums?
I've never heard of this before.

there are several companies that offer it. My vet isn't a big fan of it and doesn't accept it, though they do allow the fliers and brochures to be set out.

My understanding is that the insurance works on a reimbursement basis where I would pay a monthly fee and then when I have a qualifying vet bill, I send it to them and they send me a check for the portion they cover.

I would love to have a co-pay type set up with a deductible and prescription plan for my dogs and cats.
    Stay out of it, dude.

Really? You must be from a different country, or somethin...

I wish we had gotten insurance for our last dog. It goes beyond the exams and vaccinations. Most dogs need their teeth cleaned. And if you don't do it in a timely fashion (because maybe you don't have the money...) then your dog ends up needing some teeth removed. And when dogs start to get older, they often times come up with problems/illnesses that are extremely expensive to treat.
It depends on the dog, I suppose. Some dogs are very hardy/low maintenance. And others are that way most of their lives, then suddenly come down with various problems. I feel horrible that we had to put our 12 year old dog down last fall. It was a painful decision; we had to seriously weigh the pros/cons. She was old, but could've possible lived longer if we had the money to treat her.

    Next dog we get: Insurance.

As far as i'm concerned, if my dog wants insurance coverage, he can damn well get a job.

Ok, but what if his job doesn't offer insurance? Company can't afford it? Or what if your dog, through absolutely no fault of his own, gets laid off?

One of my dogs has been having a problem with her back leg (or hip) - the vet has put her on antiflammatory pills for a few weeks to see how she is before going the xray route. If I had dog insurance, and God forbid she has hip dysplasia - she would not be covered....it is a genetic issue prone to german shepherds and not covered. I was all set to buy a policy a few years back and started reading the fine print. Sucks

A friend of mine has a 1year old pure bred boxer that has had 2 knee replacement surgeries at $4500 a pop. The dog was $900.

He could have bought 10 dogs for the price of the surgeries.

    I currently pay $29.95 a month.

His last exam in September would've cost 254.48 - cost me nothing on the plan. This included rectal, dental, ophthalmic, otoscopic, neurological exams, fecal and blood samples and a Bordetella vaccine, among other things. His March exam and vaccinations would've been $443.77, again, cost me nothing.

Can Illegal Immigrants get pet insurance and does it cover birth control for their dogs, cats, parrots or even turtles?
