    Default The Strat Paul

Here is a project that I have been working on for a long time now. About a year ago, I bought a GFS LP copy for the parts. I got it dirt cheap because UPS had cracked the neck on the way to the warehouse.

I used all the parts, and had the body/neck sitting around, so I decided to repair the neck and see if I could get some new hardware on it and sell the guitar. I usually deal with bolt-on neck guitars, so this was a little new for me, but I eventually figured it out. I had to actually break the neck in half so I could repair it correctly, and have it all dry straight. It turned out nicely, but I had to sand off the finish on the back of the neck, which was REALLY thick, and the finish had soaked in unevenly leaving the neck looking horrible. It played fine, but it's hard to sell such a messed up looking guitar. Re-finishing was out of the question because every finish I tried wasn't compatible with whatever was on there originally...

SO... when Les Paul died, I really just wanted a nice LP to play as a tribute to the man, but like LP himself, I really don't like how about 95% of LP's play. I have huge hands, and the small scale really effects my playing. I also despise tune-o-matic bridges.

To make a long story short, I decided to take the really high quality Les Paul body, and make a guitar that I would enjoy playing. Instead of wasting time on the original neck, I sawed it off, routed a new pocket, and put a fender scale neck on it. I also ditched the tune-o-matic for a floyd, and routed the body for that. I then rounded off the build with a Dimarzio Tone Zone in the bridge, and a Fernandes Sustainer in the neck position. I'm still tweaking some things, but it's basically done, so here are some pics!

I've seen the Strat Paul through its process, and I'm still impressed. The Fender scale neck is a little weird with an LP body at first, but the guitar plays beautifully. Plus the guitar without the sunstainer on, has AWESOME sustain!!

    Again, awesome job Mike!

    Thanks guys!!

Al3d: I couldn't easily move the bridge pickup without ruining the finish, so I based all the guitar's geometry off of that. I mounted the pickup, then found the distance behind it the floyd had to go, and routed for and mounted the floyd. So at that point the floyd and bridge pickup were in the perfect place for a 25.5" scale guitar. I then measured from the floyd how far the neck would have to sit, and made a template for the neck pocket and routed out the old neck's fingerboard and joint to make my new bolt on neck pocket. The neck pickup just happened to line up nicely with the resulting 25.5" scale neck, so I didn't have to move it.
