Default The Ten Greatest Electric Guitar Players according to Time Magazine

I stumbled upon this while surfing earlier. Most of the choices are the standard ones, however I was surprised to see Yngwie in the list! Not surprisingly, no Eddie! Check it out.

That fact that Joey Ramone is on there (a guy who could literally only play three chords and expressed his disdain for solos on many occasions) says everything about the utter silliness and credibility of this list.
I tell you, I despise these "greatest of all time" lists. It's nothing but subjective nonsense. The bottom line is everyone has their own personal favorites and nothing that you say or do will change their mind. It all goes back to the schoolyard and the fourth grade "My dad can beat up your dad" mentality.

I disagree. What he's doing now has little bearing on the undeniable influence he has had on the guitar since Van Halen I hit the airwaves in 1978. Let's face it, Eddie absolutely re-invented the way the guitar was played and approached, added an entirely new vocabulary of sounds and techniques, influenced an whole generation of guitarists, pioneered new hardware and the list goes on and on... so, it's ludicrous that he didn't even make the top ten.
And as far as being the "butt of the joke" of the industry, I wouldn't invest too much into that sentiment, Alain. Most manufacturers would still kill to get Ed onboard as an endorser.

The thought of Eddie as a businessman is funny.
Or a good one at the very least.

I think Time also made Hitler the man of the year in 1938 and Stalin in 1939. What the hell do they know. I put Ed number 2 on that list.....Slash..lol

I avoid frustration over these kinds of lists by not reading them.

I have to disagree with you there.... I've seen Eddie AND Prince play live before my own eyes, and there is much more to Prince than he puts out on records.... That pint sized mofo can play better than a lot of us on this board, I'm sure. Even though he might not be able to do everything Eddie can do, I'm sure he can come close.... Just isn't his style is all.

As far as Slash goes, he is a great player IMO, but doesn't deserve to be #2. GNR wouldn't have been anything without him, just like they are nothing without him now. Now, should be be ahead of Clapton and Page? Probably not.... But Eddie's not even on the list, so it's biased to say the very least.... I mean, B.B. King? Really? Sure, he's a great blues man, but does he really deserve to be on the list?

The problem is the title. These are not the 10 greatest guitarist. This is a diverse group of guitatists who helped define their type of music and span the evolution of electric guitar. If it was titled "The 10 guitarists that redefined the instrument and inspired their generation and the ones that followed", then EVH would probably be #1. Unfortunatly, when someone make one these lists, they try to please everyone and be PC - cover all time periods and all types of music, while people like me go.... Really!, I suck, and I can play any Ramones song. G 'n' R was good, but what really has Slash contributed in grand scheme of things. I love "Classical Gas", Why is Mason Williams not on this list?
