    Default Eruption Echoplex

    Hey guys,

Just picked-up an Echoplex and wanted to know if anyone can tell me how Ed does the ending of Eruption with it?

    Thank you!

If you mean the very end where it dives, i'ts just him hitting the note and rolling down the motor speed. I have a very old Evans Super Echo, and can do to same thing. Sounds cool! I love real tape echos. You can do all sorts of weird stuff with em'. Mine has multiple heads too, so you can also get that weird tremolo sound like a vintage Echoplex. Here's a couple of pics.

Once you get the hang of it you should post a sound clip.

Here's my Echoplex...I tried rolling back the "echo delay" arm, I rolled the "sustain" and tried it with the "volume" control but couldn't get it to emulate the end of Eruption...does anyone know exactly how to do it with a unit like mine?

I'd be interested to know too. It should just be the arm. I know that alot of these units have been modified or upgraded over the years because the motors and potentiometers often failed. Do you know for sure yours has'nt been altered? Eddie apparently had tons of these in the ealy days because of this, but he really dug their sound, but they'ed always die. At any rate...you've got a real cool piece of gear.

I forgot too that he also used an earlier Univox echo. Not sure which was which on the album though.

He used the Univox with as different motor than the stock one in it, to get it to go lower or something like that. So i've read.

That's right. I've read that too. There was also someone who said how he got the oscillating sound on the end of Eruption was he used two echo units, but I don't think thats true because the spaces between oscillations are too even. Very hard to get two tape echos to run at the exact same time like that. There's alot of lag in the flywheel drive of a tape machine.
Here's a Univox. It has a rotary speed pot.

Yeah. Mine is even older than this one....and rarer. It's still real close though. The tape chamber is actually made of glass so as to avoid static noise as the tape is rustling around. Mine also has a single capstan and pinch roller. When I get some time, I'll post some pics of it. These units and the Echoplex were so far ahead of their time, given the technology, and they still sound great!

hmm, don't know,i though it might be the phaser sweeping and a delay pulsating.

That's exactly what I was thinking Jeff. It just sounds like the Phase 90 and 1 delay to me. What would be the advantage of two delays, unless they were trying to make a stereo pingpong effect which there isn't. Some of these "experts" at magazines really don't know shit. I can get quite close to the sound on my Evans by running the first and fourth head, and rolling off the delay time knob. It's not exact, but it's close enough, and you get that oscillation happenin'. How many heads are in a Univox.....Anyone know?

Yeah i can do the dive with a boss dd3,pretty close,i'm pretty sure the Univox was used just for the dive only, and the echoplex was used for the rest.

he used a modified univox tape echo for that effect. The echoplex was just the 330ms slapback delay.

I used to have the echo plex-2 and from what I remember it was done by sliding the delay arm backwards and then turning up the echo repeats knob????!? Sorry... its been a while but it can be done!
