Default Ted Templeman apparently NOT retired

I've been reading online that Ted's producing the Doobie Brothers reunion album due early next year.

"The Doobies have announced plans to reunite with long-time producer Ted Templeman for a new album in 2010."

Wondering if any Doobie fans can corroborate this. Maybe he could get involved with the new CD of another seminal 70s band...

Not a fan of the band, but from their website:

In between tour dates, the band is currently in the studio working on their upcoming full-length album, which marks the return of the longtime Doobie Brothers producer Ted Templeman. 15 songs have been written for this release.

I think Ted might say to Eddie, "Get Mike back and then we'll talk".

I'm sure if the conditions were right, he'd work with them with or without Mikey. Now what I would really find interesting is if Donn came in as well to engineer an album. The team of Landee and Templeman are just as responsible for the classic VH sound as the band in many respects. IMHO.

Yet Ed has stated not too long ago that the next album wouldn't be what the fans were used to so maybe that "classic" Van Halen sound will remain just that, "classic".

I'm sure Templeman would hire out to VH for a sizable sum. He knows he had a lot to do with their sound back then. I am thinking that Ed sold the original analog soundboard used for the six pack didn't he? Kind of hard to duplicate the brown sound without that isn't it?

Funny how the timing of this topic comes out.
On Saturday Night I was at a party and talking to a local wine maker who used to work at the same winery that the people who manage the Doobie's own and he was talking about meeting them and hanging out with them alot and he did mention that they were making a new album with their old producer and I forgot about Ted and them. We did talk about VH as well into the conversation and all he said that he wished that Mike were still there but they did sound good when he saw them in Reno. No mention of anything else than that though.

Yeah. He's been running pretty high tech boards since around OU812. He got his current one I beleive around five years ago. Recording digitally is a different animal, but there is alot more gear that makes it less sterile than it used to be. You just gotta know how to apply it. Eddie may be great with mic placement and amp settings but.......
My theory as far as the lackluster results of Eddie's producing stint is that it's too easy to try to compensate for the dryness of digital with signal processing. I notice this alot when recording digitally compared to alalog myself. When you process with analog, it just seems more forgiving. In the digital realm, there's less transparency. Side by side, my control settings on my board are completely different. It's naturally more stagnant sounding, and to my ear, when you apply compression/limiting, exciter or whatever, it tends to amplify it. I'm not saying digital is bad, it's just that a different bag of tricks is needed to make it sound the way you may vision it in your head. One guy who is excellent with digital recording is Andy Johns. He did alot of consulting in it's infancy. I was very impressed with the way the CF album came out. It sounds great. I think more producers nowadays could take some lessons from him. So many albums out these days just sound oversaturated, and honestly have a very fatiguing sound overall. Death Magnetic comes to mind.

That and Rush's Vapor Trails are pretty much unlistenable to me. The clipping and distortion appears even at low levels, and I don't care how you adjust your settings, they both are a tedious listening experience. I once described this effect to a friend in the following way: You know how Stairway To Heaven starts out quiet, then ends really loud? Imagine if the entire song (including the early parts) was played at the same volume as the solo and final section.

There simply isn't any nuance left, and that's the problem. With a good pair of earphones, by the time you've listened to perhaps three songs at most, you feel like your head is about to cave in. And wearing ear baffles underneath your headphones more or less defeats the purpose. It's a no-win situation, and definate proof that sometimes less is more.

Vapor Trails I think is Rush's worst album, because not only is production God-awful but I think most of the music sucks (though the good songs are gems surrounded by a ton of crap).

Have you heard the remastered takes on "One Little Victory" and "Earthshine" from Retrospective III earlier this year? Clearly, any bad production can be rectified with some remastering. Now they just need to remaster the damn thing already :

There's a difference between quality production and just going overboard with modern sounds and noise. A lot of bands nowadays are choosing the latter. In Rush's case, they made up for the awful VT with the very crisp and smooth sounding Snakes & Arrows, but a lot of bands continue to try and get their songs to sound as loud as possible, which results in a very messy, distorted production disaster.

Exactly! I've heard and read that some producers do this intentionally to give more "sizzle" to mp3's. Well I don't think thats totally honest. I tend to be on the side that the real reason is to keep costs down. I noticed that the new Beatles package is not available at all on Itunes. I think this was a very bold, positive move. What I read was that they outright refused to put the remasters on mp3 format because it was in their words "counterproductive" to remaster them in the first place if it were made available for the subpar quality of the specified Ipod friendly bit rate. Good on 'em!

I don't know if Ted would come back as Eddie's servant. In the old days Ted Templeman was calling the shots, and EVH had to do whatever Ted said. Ted decided which songs went on the albums. I'm not sure EVH is ready to relinquish that kind of control. Unfortunately.
