    Default Radio Cutbacks

    Hey all,

not sure if this is just a trend in Toronto or if it's across the continent but in the past few weeks 2 of the major radio stations in Toronto (the sports station and the main newstalk station) have been clearing out all kinds of radio personalities to save money. The Fan have cut all of their overnight ESPN radio broadcasts and their late night host (who i hated) and play replays now all late night and CFRB (newstalk) just fired all of their afternoon hosts. It's made radio in this town much less enjoyable and all they're doing is pushing away people away from radio even more.

Have you noticed similar trends in your hometowns? - stations making short term cost cutting moves that are effectively forcing listeners away?

    Absolutely.

There's a Rogers station in town that doesn't bother with a local midday jock.
They use some jock in Ottawa who does a show that is then piped into markets across the country, one jock, twenty stations.

A friend of mine lost his job in Edmonton after being in the market for 20 years.
Another friend finally gave up and quit due to stress after 20 years in the same market.

This is the industry i'm toying with going back to.
    Fuck can i pick 'em.

It's a nationwide trend. I used to work in radio as a newscaster. Radio personalities and even program directors are often required to do a lot of different jobs because of cutbacks. It's also cheaper and easier to have the machines do everything for you, ie. canned shows, newscasts, etc. At the last station I worked at, newscasts were cut in half and the morning call in show was axed. Of course having your radio stations owned by media giants such as Rogers, Chorus, Astral, NewCap, etc, etc, doesnt help either. First thing a company does following a merger or aquisition: CUT.

It's a never ending cycle. The big conglomerates accumulate stations and find "synergies' and "redundancies", and puree programming into a indistinguishable mush ladled with ads that chases off listeners by the scads. They announce in response the need to further cut to maintain the bottom line. Repeat, ad infinitum.

Bottom line is that nationwide advertising is down by huge percentages in TV and radio...not to mention print which is all but dead. cut backs are just the beginning.

Not all print is dead. Niche print is booming.

Last year we lost a pretty entertaining FM talk station that had been Stern's former gig before moving on to Sirius.

All the jocks were fired and the format was replaced by yet another top 40 station (which I think is the third one for the LA/OC area).

I felt the compulsion to shoot penguins upon hearing this was happening. Oh well.

This trend has been going on in the States for years now. It got really bad around the turn of the century. Once the Y2K bug didn't bite, owners knew they could get rid of most of the human staff.

no joke. the Houston market, which at one point was as vibrant as anywhere, has gone to complete shit. We have three stations that are almost identical as they play 80s and a mix of 90s and current pop and rock. Then we used to have a classic rock station and an oldies station. They did away with the oldies part and were just playing 60s and 70s, heavy on the 70s so it was in essence classic rock without led zep and aerosmith type stuff. A couple months ago they finally rebranded it AGAIN and turned into, yep, a full on classic rock station. So now, we have three crappy 80s-today mix stations, two crappy classic rock stations, a crappy buuzzzzzz modern alt-rock station that plays metallica and nirvana (I don't understand their obsession with metallica) but in reality it's a modern douche rock station. (God I hate douce rock.) Finally we have the obligatory crappy top 40 station. All of them have their crappy morning show and all of them have waaaaay too many commercials. We don't have a regular rock station and there is nowhere on the dial we can hear motown, elvis or beatles (other than the occasional Come Together or Something or Hey Jude on one of the classic rock stations) Yep, this is Houston too...fourth largest city and all that jazz.

Thank god for XM and my CD collection.
    Stay out of it, dude.

Even SIRIUS/MX has gotten repetitive and boring since the merger. I'm wondering if my receiver was actually old, and quit working? Or, if it got bored of the same stuff over and over and killed itself?

yeah, i've noticed that too. I'm seeing not-so-deep tracks on the deep tracks station and the same 50 or so songs making the rounds on pretty much all the stations. I tend to do A LOT more scanning and flipping now than I did last year. But still, I'll take the 100 or so stations over Houston's 5 any day.
    Stay out of it, dude.
