    Default Hypothetical Question

Say Billy Sheehan did join VH back in 1980 when Ed (according to B.S.) asked him. Do you think he sticks around for the Sammy era? I say no. If he didn't stick around because of the direction of Skyscraper I say he leaves for the same reason on 5150.

    Any thoughts?
I can't remember which comedian said it, about the current state of Van Halen, but he said right now, Van Halen is like a really hot playboy playmate with a prosthetic leg.

hmm...maybe Sheehan would have pushed Ed into a whole new direction and with or without DLR, Van Halen in the eighties would have been more of a sophisticated, less commercial band. Or maybe, the music would have been too busy and they would have turned into Mr. Big where they still had a passionate following but lost their major mass commercial appeal.

    interesting question.
    Stay out of it, dude.

Would this hypothetical have prevented VH3 from happening?

i have no idea. based on his history with Dave, maybe he doesn't make it through 1984 - that said, who says 1984 happens with him in the band?

the only thing that I'm certain of is that Ed and Al would have become Scientoligsts if Billy had joined the band, and this would be blamed for them not releasing new music.

I love it when people complain about threads like this when there is quite literally no Van Halen news to speak of. Speculation, assumption, guesswork, and taking things for granted has defined Van Halen for 11 years. At least we have active members and active threads for a band is anything but active.

I think that's a very interesting hypothetical question.

Here's my take on what might have happened in that alternate reality.

Billy Sheehan joins VH. The songs start taking more of a "serious" direction.

Dave, doesn't like the direction that the band is going in, so he splits.

Instead of auditioning a new singer, the band does an album as a trio (Eddie, Alex and Billy). The album is mostly instrumentals with a few songs with either Eddie or Billy singing.

After a brief tour, they record another album. This one would be like the album Eddie wanted to do with a different singer on each song.

The tour in support of that album would probably be a bit of a hassle, so one singer is asked to do the tour, and that would be Sammy.

They all hit it off, and they do a couple of albums and tours with Sammy as their singer. But Sammy continues to do his solo thing in between VH albums with no complaints from the brothers.

Billy joins up with Steve Vai in the between times. Eddie does a solo album, then an album with Steve Lukather, Tony Levin and Terry Bozzio.

The alternate reality VH of Eddie, Alex, Billy, and Sammy make a couple more albums and tour. Sammy opens the Cabo Wabo, and shifts his focus to the business. VH takes some time off.

VH gets back together with Dave and Mike to make an album and tour, and the fans of that reality's VH complain that if there's "No Billy, there's No Van Halen."

    The End.
What is understood need not be discussed.

    I like relish.

I'll bite. I'm bored atm waiting on a repair dude.

Although it didn't pan out for him Dave had an insightful idea with Skyscraper. Maybe the material wasn't strong enough, the approach right but Dave saw dance beat oriented music coming into popularity and he wanted that touched on in Skyscraper. He tried to incorporate a coming trend. BS didn't want to go in that direction. Though Skyscraper was a moderate success at the time it didn't succeed the way DLR envisioned the "fusion" would.

As far as Sam era. I wouldn't compare Sam era to Skyscraper at all. Different styles and approaches. Van Hagar was a lot more like Journey than DLR's Skyscraper or CVH. I'm not saying Skyscraper is better, it's a weak album but it's totally different.

If Billy hung in there with Mr. Big I think he would have hung in with Van Hagar. Ed and his rhythm section came up with killer music despite some pop fluff and the VH name/brand was huge. Ed and that style was king then. I think Billy would have ridden it out with Ed and co. whoever sung at least until the mid 90's, when that style of music started falling out of "fashion" and problems began. Also who knows how well Ed and Bill would have gotten along all those years. The grass is always greener until you are in the situation.

I don't like Mr. Big, so I am glad it didn't happen!
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

The only thing that would have stopped VH III was Ed L not dying.

One thing is for sure if Billy joined VH. Wolfgang would of shit himself trying to play Billy's bass lines.
