Default Seymor Duncan Coil Tap Advise ?

Went to a local guitar store today looking for a zebra set of Duncan pups for my new AX40, the SH-2 Jazz and SH-4 JB hot rodded pair.

Well I was talking to the salesman about also wanting a 500k push/pull volume pot, so I could split the coils. The guy goes on to tell me that this set sounds like shit when tapped, and would be a waste of my time.

I have to admit, I was a bit shocked, as this shop is a local Seymour Duncan dealer, and this guy was trying to steer me toward a set of Dimarzio's.

So in short....I walked out empty handed, but thought I would run it up the flag-pole around here and get some advice, as I trust you guys a lot more than some pimp in a music store.

Was this guy really trying to be helpful, or just trying to unload some Dimarzios ? Any of you guys have any experience with coil tapping this set of Duncans?

I thought I knew exactly what I wanted, and had done enough research to make an informed buy, but now I'm not so sure....

    A little help?

Not those particular ones, but my Duncan Custom SH-5 is split, and it's pretty bright. I like it for when I need it.

i've never been a huge fan of coil taps in general, to me they never sound like a single coil, iunderstand the idea and also the reasons why they don't sound like true singles, my philosophy is, if ya need single coils....buy a strat!...and its worked for me for well over 20yrs!!
i do have experience with the sh-2 and sh-4 and will go on the record to say they sound awesome and are very versatile even as straight up humbuckers (without a tap) my advice would be to ignore the guy in the store and stick with your gut, if you do fit a coil tap and don't like it later down the road then it's a no brainer to reverse (or simply not use)....then you can go out and buy a strat and mod the shit out of it!

hope this was of some help Lode

I've got taps on my Peavey HP Special, but I don't use them a lot. A little, but not a lot.
I just figured if the pups can be tapped, and make for a more versatile instrument, why not make them available? I'm already upgrading the pickups, so for the cost of a $10 push/pull pot, I can get another sound out of them.

He probably was just trying to help. I'm not sure about the JB, but IMHO, Duncan Jazz pups can sound like shit when tapped. They just sound like real weak lipsticks. As far as pushing Dimarzio's, what models was he suggesting?

Everyone told me the Wolfgang pickups sounded like shit coil tapped. I wanted to have the option anyway, so I did it to one of my Wolfs. You know what? They don't sound that bad. They're not, of course, stellar single coil pickup tones. But they do get that single coil "chime," and I am able to use that guitar live and in the studio as I wanted to. If you want the SDs and want to a tap to them, do it. Worse case scenario you end up not liking the taps and have to throw a regular 500K pot in there.

    +1

If my current guitar project was nearing completion, I could tell you what Dimarzio Tone Zones and Air Nortons sound like tapped, but I'm still a few weeks away from being able to play and record that guitar.

From my experience with higher power duncans, I think coil tapped they would sound pretty bright and bitey, but hey, lots of great strat pickups sound like that anyway, you might like it.

I've done it with both of those and a few other Duncan models too.

They were all usable, maybe not the greatest single coil tone ever - but I wouldn't say any of them sounded like "shit".
People want the coil split just so they can get that thinner, chimey sound to contrast the humbucker - and you'll get it. Unless you want to get superb Strat tones out of it, I doubt you'd be disappointed.

Here's a video I did a while back demonstrating one of my guitars - it has a SD "Custom Custom" and "Jazz", and if you skip to 1:30 you can hear the humbucker sound in all 3 positions contrasted with the split sound in all positions. Thought you might like to hear it. It's camcorder quality, but you can hear the character of the sound.
