Default Azoff, Ticketmaster, Scalping and Van Halen

    http://www.ticketnews.com/WSJ-Azoff-...t-market809277

In the fall of 2007, before the deal fell apart, the brokers were reportedly part of the scheme to scalp Van Halen tickets, according to the Journal, which was a major story that year. As part of the deal, the brokers were given hundreds of premium seats to sell, and then split the proceeds with Van Halen and Ticketmaster. The band is one of Azoff's clients, and the plan reportedly led to Van Halen making at least an extra $1 million on that tour.

The reported deal with the brokers paints a sobering picture of the lengths Azoff and Ticketmaster would go to in its quest to remain the world's dominant ticketing company, and also shines a light on just how much power the company could have if it also hooks up with the world's largest concert promoter, Live Nation.

we discussed this during the tour. It's a sad reality of the business. The big ticket brokers tend to get their seats directly from the promoters. I know that's certainly the case in Toronto.

This must be the most fleshed out article I have seen about the situation.

Don't have much time to discuss it today but thought it was worth the post.

According to this article, VH was aware of the scalping activity. I'd like to hear the band's response to these claims.

scalping is legal and an example of pure capitalism and as such we're supposed to respect and appreciate the elegant beauty of such a simple system that ensures those with the means and the desire to pay the most for the best actually get the opportunity and as such, dont' have to mix with the rabble in the nosebleeds.

what was that line John said on stage once? He was thanking people for their applause, or maybe cuing their applause and then said "but for those of you in the front, if you'll just rattle your jewelry."
    Stay out of it, dude.

But then think of the EVH letter in support of the merger.

Pretty obscene in light of these new revelations. In the old days, bands were AGAINST scalpers and outraged that they would take a lot of money form their loyal fans. Seems like another episode in the long saga of VH happily f*&(ing their fanbase.

The band will probably deny it. And they will be denying the truth.

Like what It's Mike said, most of the scalpers get their tickets from the promoter.

Scalpers getting tickets direct from promoters is as long standing a tradition as scalping itself. People are just finally having their eyes open to it.

As for vh screwing their fans...well in this isolated situation they are simply part of the status quo.

I don't want to hear the band's response to these claims, because it will simply be half-truth bullshit. VH, as it exists today, is a business. They made a deal to promote their business and increase revenue. It's why Eddie played two custom-striped Charvel guitars at every show, then sold them on eBay for crazy prices; it's why the band (and many bands nowadays) do premium ticket packages with prizes and backstage privileges. Some here at the Links took pride in the '07/'08 VH tour gross numbers. My take was this: "Wow. They're really finding every little way to suck it out of the fans."

I didn't post a response to the thread that quoted Eddie's letter to Congress. But my thought at the time was that Eddie and Van Halen in general need to stay out of politics.

Of course the band was in on it. Wouldn't you make extra money for doing nothing? Azoff is a parasite who needs his ass to be kicked. He's the scab who invented the $100.00+ concert ticket back in 1994 when The Eagles came around. Prior to that, concert tickets were priced in the high $20's to low $30's. Unfortunately, the sheep of the people decided that they didn't mind and every concert that the Eagles did that year would sell out. Since then, concert ticket prices and "legal" scalping have taken over and as a result, I no longer attend shows.

I mean, I saw the Stones in 1989 for $28.50 per ticket, then we went through a horrible recession where nobody had money, and through it all, Azoff brought us the $100+ concert ticket that nobody seemed to mind buying.

It's all a crock of crooked bullshit that I never took part of.

There is only ONE way to CONTROL ticket prices, sold by Ticketreicher/Slave Nation, for big name artists.

    DON'T buy 'em.

The sad reality is that this kind of BS isn't new. Its highlighted now because of changes in semantics as to how the screwee gets screwed. What has changed is that, with record revenues going down, concert revenue is now the main source of revenue for artists and, the more established they are, the more opportunities available to milk the fans.

As stated earlier, VH is but part of the status quo on this. Doesn't make it right but I'm not holding them any more responsible that anyone else. The whole system is fucked up. I'm paying a kings ransom to see U2 next month because there's enough fingers in that pie to jack up the prices. However, given the desire I have to see them, I've deemed it worth it to the point I'm not going to boycott it. U2, Tool, and the last VH tour (which I viewed as possibly being the last time I'll see them) have been pretty much the exception for me. Otherwise, I'm skipping a lot of other bands that require dealing directly with Livenation and/or Ticketmaster. No Metallica, Slayer for me even though I'd love to see them.

I am, however, seeing lots of smaller named artists. I've seen Bill Frisell, Sunn o))), and few others this year by buying directly from the club or the artist website. I feel good knowing more of my $ is going to worthwhile artists and I'm getting more for my money. Until the system changes, that's how I'll protest it.
