    Default Eventide PitchFactor Harmonizer

So I'm looking to get that harmonizer sound from the Sammy era and I was wondering if anyone has messed with the new eventide pedal? What kind of sounds were you able to get out of it?

I bought this pedal about two months ago and love it. With the MicroPitch effect, you can achieve the F.U.C.K./Balance harmonization. With the H910/H949 effect, you can achieve the Fair Warning - OU812 harmonization. Plus, it has stereo outs. I think you would be very happy with it.

If you haven't yet, check out the demo:

Yep, the 910/949 is the way to go.

I'll be adding one of these to my rack soon!

Guys, I've never owned one of these units and know Eddie used a harmonizer at some point in his career.

What impact on the sound does it make? What examples of VH music have the harmonizer on?

I'm interested in what this does to the sound.

    Thanks

Pretty much everything from VH2 on have some form of harmonizer on them. Perhaps even some small snippets of VH1. The unit detunes the audio signal and plays it alongside the original signal, so for instance, Ed's balance tone seems to be left channel detuned -9cents, center is unaltered, right channel detuned +9cents. When you mix those 3 signals together, the guitar sound gets HUGE.

Is there a way to get close with a chorus/delay set-up?

Kinda, but a chorus always has the 'whoosh' modulating sound in it. The detune sounds much less like it has heavy effects on it. It sounds cleaner. Hard to explain. A chorus will give you a much more OU812 sound than anything else.

I understand what you are saying. Can you give me some parameters for each effect that you think would be close?

On your chorus? What parameters does it have on it? I'm not sure if I'll know what to tell you, I don't use a chorus. Basically, you want it set low on everything, and almost stop the modulation at all. Also, if you can set it low in the mix, do it.

IMO there is a harmonizer at least in the mix on VH1. RWTD during verses you can hear that detune whine.

I think you're right. I'm sure I can hear it in various places too on VH1. From what I've gathered though, it would have been done outside of Ed's rig, like added later in the studio.

So I bought the harmonizer and I have been playing with it for a few days now, and wow! it sounds great! The micropitch settings is definitely the way to go for the balance and f.u.c.k. tone. It has two channels which you can blend together, one can only be raised up to 50 cents and the other can be lowered up to -50, thus you can get that balance tone easily by raising one to 7 cents and the other to -5. Another thing I like to do is set the micropitch signal at 100% wet and at -50 cents to detune my signal half a step if I want to play the earlier VH stuff.

The H910/H949 gets you close to the earlier stuff. Although I'm still messing around with the settings trying to get it to match perfectly, I can get pretty close to match that clean chorusy type sound from the women in love intro, as well as the sound from the fair warning and 1984 album.

Being a VH nut, those 2 settings made that pedal worth the money. But it does has 8 more effects believe it or not! My next favorite setting is the Synthonizer setting. I can get everything from theremin like sounds to 8-bit Nintendo/super mario sounds.

I also like what I call the HarPeggiator, which I call the Malmsteen setting. You play a note and it plays an arpeggio based on the note you hit, and you can change the speed and which type of arpeggio it plays too! Shredding has never been easier!

I'd definitely recommend this pedal to anyone looking for that Van Halen harmonizer sound. I'll try to record some clips in the near future to let you guys hear it.

I ended up buying all 3 Eventide stompboxes last week. All of them are so awesome. I had soured on digital effects after using Line 6 amps for awhile but the Eventide stuff is incredible. I put them next to my analog pedals and I can't tell the difference. Really cleaned up my pedal board. The Phase 90 is probably the only pedal I would keep on my pedal board for modulation. I probably could get the modfactor to sound just like it but something special about having an analog pedal for phase. The flanger, chorus, and delays are great. And the whammy type effect on the pitchfactor allows me to remove my digitech whammy pedal from my board as well. That effect sounds much smoother and realistic than the digitech.
