Default Should the US forgive student loan debt to stimulate the economy?

There's a web site out there called www.forgivestudentloandebt.com that's trying to start a movement for the US to forgive all student loan debt.

I think this is a great idea. Instead of bailing out faceless corporations and raising taxes, why not help out those that are actually working/have worked to get a degree?

This is ANOTHER industry that needs to be reformed.

I'll have to give this some thinking, do some research in order to form a real opinion about this specific idea, however.

First you go to school and adults shit all over you.
Later you get a job and for a long time your boss shits all over you.

University is that breathing space: A rarified realm of bliss, sat atop the mountain peaks of possibility, contemplating the world through the bottom of a beer glass before cynicism and weariness begin their inexorable creep into life. Those halcyon days of chasing women and missing lectures and being allowed to have an imagination, right before you get reamed on a daily basis in soul destroying reality and thank the perpetrators for the privilege of a meagre paycheck.

    It should be free.

I don't know about forgiving the current debt, but I'm all for reforming the process so that so much isn't incurred in the first place! If they forgive student loan debt, then they need to find some sort of kickback for those of us that paid ours a long time ago and have been trying to get ahead ever since, too.

like healthcare, education (be it at a university, community college, trade school, whatever) is a cornerstone of a forward thinking civilized society.

Our taxes should allow those with the interest and the skill who demonstrate the grade, to get whatever education they want. I've written a ton about this on these links.

Private schools can charge whatever they want but if anyone wants to go to UH or ITT Tech or whatever, they should be able to show up, take the entrance exams and get started.

A few weeks ago I would have said yes however I am so sick of all this shit, a line has to be drawn in the sand.

A government cannot provide everything for everyone. Civilized societies be damned. Our dollar is worth shit, our deficit is growing and our economy is most likely never going to recover the way we would like it to be. Sure it would be nice to have free education along with world peace but sometimes a dream is what it is, a dream.

You can't have free health care, free education, a military to protect your national interests, industry, climate change conscious, government owned auto manufactorers along with a social security fund that will be in place by 2050 without increasing the taxes for everybody dramatically.

There is not enough money to go around, the rich included. The fact of the matter is that life isn't fair and governments are not fair.

While it would be great if everything was free or at a reduced price because the government was stepping in with everyone else's tax dollars to pay for such things, where is this going to end?

"The trouble with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money."

Our government and capitalist system was not setup to pay for all of the things that would be "nice" to have paid for by tax dollars. And as has been pointed out, what about the millions of people who have paid for their education?? These same people will be the ones who are called upon to pay for those who do not want to be burden with the debt. Is that fair???
Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance.

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.

My thing is, some people benefit more from a college education than others, occasionally parlaying their college attendance into a better-than-average living. I went for two years and learned various skills that I'd loved to have put to use, the only one that's benefitted me all these years is...typing! So I paid all that money to learn to type. Could've done that in high school - had no vision that it would become such a useful skill in the pre-dawn of the computer age (perhaps they should teach typing in grade school before sending them home to use the web. But then they'd probably have to teach them to read and write first and that wouldn't do as it would take time away from teaching them to dance to the latest rap (s)hit and going on a field trip to the local theme park).

First off, the athletes. I love sports, but that doesn't mean I feel I should subsidize their "education". And I doubt Joe Quarterback would make as much money in the NFL if he was drafted from the local semi-pro team. These guys come out of college, make millions and pretty much probably had a free ride in college, and while the other schmoes are having to dish out $200 for a text book, these "student"-athletes are rarely required to touch one. If my tax dollars are going to pay for people to go to college - these guys either take classes (other than "physical education") and pass like everyone else is expected to, or they get someone to form a semi-pro league for them.

Then there are people like doctors and lawyers who do quite well after college. Nothing wrong with that, and having their education subsidized might allow some people that could be great doctors be able to now fulfill that promise, but again, if I'm going to be footing the bill for their education, then I want a great reduction on my medical and legal bills should I incur them.

Also, if my taxes are paying for your education - you better have a plan. And not a five or six-year one, either! I'm not paying for you to go sit in a dorm room and smoke doobies taking one course a semester until you're thirty and can figure out what you want to do with your life.

There is an easy way to provide reduced education costs along with actually learning a skill.

Force everybody to join the military. Most kids don't know what the hell interests them at 18-23. You pick several majors and usually get one that amounts to shit when you have to work for a living. This way you get a GI BIll to use after when your service is up. You should be able to get managerial skills by advancement. You learn a trade, travel the world and can help secure the interests of the United States.

Oh BTW, you have free medical during this period of time which would help with our national health care crisis since 18-24 year olds constitute a portion of the uninsured.

When you get done after 4 or 6 years, you will have worked for a living, can spend the GI Bill in a most likely a more useful degree than what you would have strived for at 18 and are probably more disciplined in the matters of life.

For a lucky few, you may want to have this as your career. You will retire at age 38.
