Default Happy 50th Birthday "Kind of Blue"

Maybe the best album of all time.

Why Miles Davis' Kind of Blue is So Great.

Miles Davis' Kind of Blue, which was released 50 years ago today, is a nearly unique thing in music or any other creative realm: a huge hit—the best-selling jazz album of all time—and the spearhead of an artistic revolution. Everyone, even people who say they don't like jazz, likes Kind of Blue. It's cool, romantic, melancholic, and gorgeously melodic. But why do critics regard it as one of the best jazz albums ever made? What is it about Kind of Blue that makes it not just pleasant but important?...

    Amen.

This disc still has a place of honor in my ride's CD changer almost a year after buying it. Nothing quite like driving down a moonlit PCH to "Blue in Green", baby.

To tell the truth, although I loved this album for years, it's true significance was truly rammed home by Ashley Kahn's exhaustive study in the making of this amazing album, Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece. Do yourself a favor and pick up or loan a copy of this terrific book, which goes into remarkable detail regarding how these sessions went about. Also of use is Eric Nisenson's work The Making of Kind of Blue: Miles Davis and His Masterpiece. Not quite as detailed as Kahn's effort, the book still is highly engaging and informative.

An amazing album. Thanks for mentioning it.

Myself, I love to have it on driving around the city at night. Especially if it's raining a little. It makes every stoplight a work of art.

Awesome. Gonna have to remember that. We should be getting some rain here in another 2 months or so. Sounds like a near-religious experience.

I first heard "Kind of Blue" in 1989 and it was my introduction to Miles and Jazz in general. I loved it but its only been since I've checked out all of Miles' stuff (which is a stellar catalog by any definition) as well as the catalogs of Monk, Parker, Coltrane, Dizzy, and the like that I've come to truly appreciate its worth. When you listen to "Kind of Blue" in the context of what came before and after it, you see what a landmark that album is. And the frickin line up is as much of "supergroup" as any gathered in any genre. Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley are fantastic.

I'm humming the bass line for "So What" as I write this. Think I'll go dial up the ipod.

I picked up the double CD edition last year for $10.00 new, as Circuit City was going down....

    A masterpiece.

If I could only own ten CDs, "Kind of Blue" and Coltrane's "A Love supreme" would be on the list before I even had time to think about it.

Fifty years? THAT is staying power. It probably sells as much today as it did when it was released.

Bill Evans is light years ahead of Winton Kelley on the piano for that song. Winton's very bouncy and jazzy while Bill is like a Picasso painting.
Winton's great and everything (he was Miles' regular pianist at that time) but once Bill has played something, it's all over. Especially a tune he wrote.

    (Big Bill Evans fan.)

...which leads me into a bit of a rant.

    Bad jazz is bad!

There's nothing worse that some hacks playing this tune. It's only got two chords, so everybody thinks it's easy.

    It. Is. Not.
Stop noodling right now and get off the bandstand.

One of the strangest versions of "So What" was done by Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, and Tony Rice on "The Pizza Tapes". Granted it was just a jam session but it was the equal in quality to a 12 year old kid at Guitar Center trying to play "Stairway to Heaven".
