Default The AT Custom Tuxedo Ash Strat!

On August 8th I completed a new custom guitar--the Tuxedo Ash Strat. This project's initial catalyst was a set of white Schaller tuners I bought off eBay in 2006; they were new-old-stock from the early 80s. (I just missed winning orange ones from the same seller.) At the time I certainly had no idea what I would use a set of white Schaller tuners for, but they were cool. I wondered about building an all-white guitar--a gimmick mostly--so I kept my eye out for more white parts. In July I landed this Olympic white ash Strat body, but when comparing part options against it I kept wanting to see black, especially with regard to the pickguard. The idea of a "tuxedo" guitar suddenly sounded (and looked) more appealing, so that's what it became.

The Tuxedo Ash Strat has a mix of chrome and black hardware, along with a satin chrome finished Floyd Rose tremolo. It wasn't meant to be uniform, just a balance of white, black, and "shiny." The "AT" decals were added to offer up a custom look, and its designated strap is an Ace Frehley-styled black with white lightning bolt. Gimmicky, indeed.

Pictures of this guitar in progress, along with my other guitar projects, can be found in the photos section of my MySpace page: www.myspace.com/andrewthomassolomusic.

The parts list and photos are below!

Mighty Mite Solid Ash Strat Body--Olympic White Finish
Mighty Mite Maple Neck--22 Frets, 1 5/8" Gotoh Floyd Rose Locking Nut, C-Shape Profile, 9.5"-12" Compound Radius, Medium-Jumbo Frets, Black Inlays, Satin Finish
GFS Crunchy Pat Humbucker Bridge & Neck Pickups
Ping Licensed Floyd Rose Satin Chrome Tremolo Bridge w/ EVH D-Tuna
500K Volume Potentiometer w/ White Knob
3-Way Pickup Selector Switch w/ Black Tip
    Warmoth 3-Ply Black/White/Black Pickguard & Tremolo Cover
Switchcraft Jack w/ Black Jack Plate
    Schaller M6La Mini White Tuners
Chrome Floyd Rose String Retainer Bar
Chrome Neck Plate w/ Black Plastic Gasket
    Black Strap Buttons

Sweet as usual....AT's custom jobs always light a fire under my ass to build one, because he basically builds exactly what I would!

Thanks for the words, everyone. This was a quick and fun project to do. It'll look good on stage.

I have another guitar I finished literally 36 hours after this one (I've had about five projects running simultaneously all summer), and I have two more nearly completed. This tuxedo Strat is #19 in my series of custom guitars, the one after it is #20, and #21 and #22 will soon be done. Three guitars I've sold, and three guitars were built for other people. That leaves the remaining 16 that are still in my possession. I play most of them--a couple need some setup and small bits of work. And while I'm super proud of building my own axes and feeling quite confident about it, with the completion of this tuxedo Strat I kind of found myself just not feeling that "high" from doing it. I think I've burned out a little. I think a short break is in order once I finish the next two.

no joke...that's a lot of work you've been doing. No matter how much I love doing something, those things do get old after a while. Nothing wrong with taking a break and waiting for the mojo to come back.

The Tuxedo Ash Strat made its live debut last night with AT/DT at Club Underground in Minneapolis on our traditional show-closer "Bar Fight." There's 30-plus f-bombs in this thing (only 27 on the studio version), just so you know. Some dude we really didn't know shot it for YouTube.

Thanks, dude. That whole show on Saturday felt loose, but it wasn't quite as bad as I recall now seeing the song on video.

The Tuxedo Strat served well as my tune-down guitar. That might be its role at gigs in the future.

There's nothing quite like reviewing audio/video of perceived "trainwreck" shows, only to come to realize they really weren't quite as bad as they felt at the time (for whatever reason), is there, AT?

Btw, that "tuxedo" guitar does have a distinctive vibe to it, doesn't it...
