Default EVH in Rolling Stone about the progress of his recovery

The current issue of RS (1085), at the supermarke, has a quote from EVH about his hand surgery. EVH was quoted as saying something to the effect of "that he will now be able have the dexterity in that hand that he had when he was 18".

Well that's Good To Hear !

I might have to grab my dictionary to see what that word means....
What is understood need not be discussed

"Dont disturb my paradise. I've asked you once. I've asked you nice" - "SERIOUS JU JU"

"I am in a blissful state. Dont bug me!!!" - Richard Dreyfuss "The Goodbye girl" 1977

I hope that's true, but I wouldn't ever bank on coming out of a surgery and having my hand be 30+ years more dexterous.

That depends on how fucked up it was.

I respect modern medical advances as much as the next person, but can you take a 54 year old and give it the dexterity of an 18 year old hand? Shit, if they can do that, I'm going in for surgery tomorrow and there's nothing wrong with my hand, and I'm not that old.

    When i was 18 i didn't need my hand.
The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

I think this is very possible especially if he had things there making movement painful , stiff, or labored.

Check out Malmsteen and Namm 09. He's 46 ish and smoking like it was 25 years ago and back in the day he broke his hand in a car accident.

Or consider how nimble Satch is at his age.

Ed seemed to struggle last tour on some things that aren't that difficult.
If this is a big part of the reason I think this is great news for VH fans.

Anyway this is sweet news. You kidding me? A more nimble and focused Ed on guitar on a new record/tour AND DLR is in VH!? Fuck yes!

This is the same article that first appeared in this thread, nearly a month ago:

Exclusive: Eddie Van Halen Recovering After Hand Surgery

Eddie Van Halen is said to be on the mend after undergoing surgery to treat increasing pain in his left hand.

“During the last leg of our tour, I started developing pain in my thumb and my pinky. I didn’t think much of it at the time,” the guitarist says. “It got progressively worse to the point that about three months ago I wasn’t able to play at all. My pinky and my thumb were totally locked up and felt like there was something broken.”

Van Halen sought out specialists in Düsseldorf, Germany, who initially began treating the guitarist for arthritis, but soon discovered a bone spur, twisted tendon and a cyst in the joint of his left thumb.

“They said the only way to fix it was surgery, which of course scared the shit out of me, but I was told it was the only way to fix it,” Van Halen says. “Surgery was a success, now I just have to let it heal. I am totally jazzed that they found the problem, fixed it and in about four months my hand will feel like I am 18 again. Thank God.”

Van Halen is said to be recovering nicely, having already regained his reach and full spread of his hand. He’s said to be taking his recovery slowly, however, to insure he heals properly. His rehabilitation should be complete in 4-6 months.

“In the meantime I am able to write a bit, but can not overexert my hand because it needs to heal properly,” the guitarist says.

His stitches come out in a few days, and he’s confident he’ll be able to play at maximum intensity when he completes his recovery.

I haven't seen Satch struggle with "old age."

Is it one more of these "EVH in denial" interviews? Like "oh no, the decline of my playing skills is not my fault, it has nothing to do with drinking, drugs and all the destructive behavior I engaged in, it's just "old age.""???

You think Ed is lying about needing surgery and the things that were wrong requiring surgery to repair?

I'm just troubled by the "dexterity of an 18 year old" comment. Goes with the "Wolf plays like Jack Bruce" thing and a number of other "lunatic" EVH comments we've heard during the last decade.

Me too. Unfortunately this prognosis is coming from Ed, not the doctors.

Although, I'm pretty sure the "four to six months" before he starts doing anything is going to turn out to be accurate.

    Don't read this.

I ain't disputing it's going to be much better. But 18? I'm guessing perhaps he might feel like it's 18 again. But time's a bitch, I don't think you can just turn back the time on our body parts to the peak of dexterity. Maybe I'm wrong, I have no idea. Just strikes me as an odd claim. Is there a doctor in the house???

It was probably just a number he pickcked at random. I'm sure he doesn't really expect his hands to be like they were when he was 18, but he probably feels like he is going to have much more dexterity than he did on the last tour.
