    Default EvH Star Guitar Makeover

I posted a thread awhile back when I first started restoring this guitar, but I couldn't find it.

This guitar was originally painted with Krylon many many years ago.
However, like all my other Krylon "factory finish" paintjobs, it too started to crack everywhere.

The time put into replicating this graphic was unbelievable and I was crushed.
I couldn't just leave it like that ... I'm way too anal and it would really bother me had I just left it. Besides, I wasn't really happy with how it sounded and wanted to take this opportunity to try some different things and to see if paint really does make a difference in tone since I would be repainting it with acrylic urethane.

Here are the finished pics ...

I was really dreading having to do this one over ... but I'm really glad I did.
Not only does it sound WAY better, but I like the paintjob better too.
    Thanks for looking.

Wow. Thats amazing, truly. I give you credit for following through and redoing it after the unfortunate paint bs. After all that work it would be a shame to not have what you worked hard for. Grats!!

Dino, I love it! Great job. Let us know if Eddie calls and wants to buy it off you. So, you going play it or hang it on a wall? Not to hyjack your thread, but the new Wolfgang has an acrylic urethane paint job. What can you tell me about it. Is it only for professionals with spray guns, or can you get in spray cans? Again, masterful work. Thanks for sharing and making us all green with envy.

PS - I wanted to reread a thead I started, so I clicked on myself, and then clicked on the - Threads started - and found it and the info I wanted. Just an FYI.

    Thanks!
Sorry to say ... I don't play nearly as much as I used to.
Regardless ... I've never built a guitar to just "hang on a wall".

I didn't know that about the new Wolfgangs .... that's very interesting!
I use sprayguns, but I've heard there are some paint shops that can put it in a can for you. I'm not sure how that would work though. Acrylic urethane needs to be mixed with a catylist, and then it cures pretty quick, so I'm thinking they probably use cans specifically designed for this. I dunno ... I've never used acrylic urethane in a can.

Ahhh ... I didn't even think of that.

I am not a paint expert, but I got this from the EVHgear website:

    4.7.07
Ellis’s eight test guitars are examined at 5150. The thin acrylic urethane and lacquer-only finishes are deemed best, but the pickups still sound “too harsh.”

Magna Coatings is the paint they are using. I could be totally wrong, I figured you used acrylic urethane because it was a good guitar paint. Maybe the new Wolf's are acrylic only. I guess I shoudn't assume.

    Thanks for the info.
Acrylic urethane IS good "guitar paint" IMO.
It's commonly used in the automotive industry, but there are guitar manufactures that use it as well (PRS is another that comes to mind).

I hope you don't think I was saying it it isn't. I don't know anything about paint and I probably didn't word things well. What I ment was that you seem to be far ahead of everyone in your use of acrylic urethane for guitars. Those who use duplicolor and reranch nitro should use acrylic urethane for factory finishes and their guitars would sound better!

No, I knew what you meant ... I was simply agreeing.

And I would never say I was "far ahead" of anyone.
There are guys here who can paint circles around me with Duplicolor and ReRanch.

I'm not say'n that acrylic urethane is "the best" paint for guitars, but I will say it works best for me.

Cool - EVH seems to think acrylic urethane allows the woods natural tone to show through the finish better than some finishes that stifle the resonant qualities of the wood. That is all I was saying. I know there are some crazy good luthiers on the links.

Dino that came out beautiful bro. That is one ax that you do not see to many people duplicate. In fact it is probably the least duped of all of Eddies axes and to tell the truth I just about had all but forgot about it till now. Once again a great job.
