2009 Perseid Meteor Shower to be a Good One !

    http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...r-tonight.html

Meteor Shower Tuesday Night August 11th, 2009 to Yield 80 Meteors an Hour?
    Ann Minard
    for National Geographic News
    Updated August 11, 2009

The Perseid meteor shower will have to fight it out with a bright moon for visibility this year, but astronomers are still predicting a dazzling show tonight.

From any vantage point in the world, you might see more than 80 meteors an hour streak across the sky during the best viewing time, when the moon's glare will be weakest—late tonight and into the wee hours of tomorrow, local cloud and lighting conditions permitting.

Hell yeah! Couple more hours. Gonna grab a cigar, a beer and watch the sky light up. Might put "Light up the Sky" on repeat!

I spotted some meteors a couple nights ago. Thanks for the heads up about the shower Rover. Lookin up tonight.

Wish I lived in the country and could see the night sky in all its glory. Light pollution sucks!

Coming in for another cigar and more scotch after first hour of viewing. I've only seen 5 in the first hour, but the moon is pretty bright here and probably tamping down the show. Still fun though!

was out on the patio with the dogs at 4 am today but the moon was really bright and there was heavy cloud cover.

Still, it's been a long time since I just looked up at the stars and I noticed that there were different constellations out.
    Stay out of it, dude.

Yes, it's amazing that in generations past, for thousands of years, journeys were navigated by the stars for all the residents of Earth.

I used to spend a lot of time paying attention to the skies. Back when in my single days and when I didn't go into work until the afternoons, I would drive around, go to parks and stuff and just hang out late at night staring at the stars. Nowadays, well, I guess I've just gotten caught up in life too much to think about it. kind of sad actually.

Too much light pollution where I live to be able to see anything. Sky was a little hazy as well from a rare August onshore flow.

Nice clear night last night and I live a little off the beaten path so light pollution isn't as big an issue. The moon was too bright, but I still saw ten streak the sky while I smoked two cigars and had many scotches. Just a really fun, relaxing time. May have to try it again tonight it was so peaceful.

If you wouldn't be bored to death in the first 4 hours, it'd be a blast to bring you out on the road. At any time through the Plains states, as long as you're not near a town (which isn't that tough) I could pull over, get out and look up. More stars than you could ever imagine. Makes you realize how truly small you are.

that's one of the things I love most about getting out of town. Everytime we go out to Branson, I take advantage and pull off to the side of the road in the middle of nowhere and just look up.

It's truly humbling and stunningly beautiful.

Darned if I didn't see the show last night. I was too busy inside doing house crap that I can't do during the day b/c of my pesky job. I forgot all about the show.

It was pretty bright outside once the moon came out although it looked pretty creepy and orange whenst it first arose since we've had fires around here. Plus we had some clouds of course to block any chance of viewing. Wish I coulda remembered to go back outside and take a look.
