    Default Strippers!!!!

............. not the kind your thinking of!!!

Paint Stripping- Whats the easiest way to strip spray paint?

Alright so here's the story, Im looking for information from people who have experience stripping paint off of guitar bodies. I have this Warmoth body that is plastered in spray paint and my plans are to use it to make a VH2 bumblebee with a factory finish, problem is i have to get all this paint off first.

So any of the three ways i do it (Sanding, Heat Gun, Chemical) I have to buy the supplies. Product pricing isnt a problem just looking for the fastest, less head-ache plan possible to keep the project fun.

The body itself had no sealer/primer/filler/clear or anything sprayed before the spray paint so im thinking it will be pretty easy to strip with heat or chem?

Tell me what you guys think..

That looks about right. I use "Zip Strip" and it's probably about the same.

Don't drink too much of it.

    Don't read this.

Yeah, that stuff will work with spray paint, but does anyone have any suggestions for a poly finish? All I've ever heard is "don't even think about trying to get that stuff off". I am aware of the heat gun treatment, but I'd be afraid to use that, considering that guitar bodies are usually pieces of wood glued together - that heat has to affect the glue (my thoughts).

I bet that stuff or aircraft stripper would get off the poly. Now, you have to realize that aircraft stripper may very well eat your entire guitar as well.

I usually sand off poly. It isn't as thick as some finishes (usually), and a nice belt sander can do the trick if chemicals won't touch it.

Poly can really only be heat gunned or sanded. I have an aircraft remover nightmare story-

I had a '54 Strat Reissue that was in awful shape but was a hella player. Some dude smoking something really good wood-burnt what looks like Alf into the belly after sanding it down. I dedcided it was best to sand Alf smooth, after it was only in the sealer coat.

You can't remove that sealer coat with anything smoother than 100 grit!!!! I then tried aircraft remover, which did NOTHING. So I decided to reseal and paint.

BIG MISTAKE!!!!! Every time I would paint anything on that body, the paint would remain tacky in the spots where the poly remained. The remover would weep from underneath the poly!!!! I did live with it for awhile (said guitar was in my "Holla (fo a Dolla)" video on youtube: www.youtube.com/dougdarocker), but ultimately, the guitar was ruined and I lunched the body.

So- if you're stripping Poly from a Fender, do one of two things: sell the body on ebay and get something real without sealer, or use a heat gun and sandpaper.
Dammit!!! I still smell like cotton candy!!!
