    Default Wireless Network help

Ok, so im super stumped on a networking issue.

I just got my new *upgraded* modem from my ISP last night and when I talked to their tech support today, they told me that I need to move the modem to a different part of the house to where the signal is strongest.

Here is how I have my internet set up RIGHT NOW

So the part im stumped on is this...

How do move my modem to a different part of the house to get a better signal without using a 40' ethernet cord between my modem and wireless router? Heres what im talking about:

When I talked to the tech support, they suggested using a wireless USB adapter as the bridge between the router and the modem but when I tried to set it up, it wouldnt work...AT ALL!

You would think they would have made something wireless that would plug into the ethernet jack on both the router and modem to solve this sort of problem.

I haven't shopped for one lately, so I don't know if they still make them, but you used to be able to buy boosters. Such as I have one, it's a linkys booster and it's about the same size as my linksys router. It connects to the antenna terminals on the router (after removing the antennas, which are then attached to the booster). My house is covered.

My father had the same issue in his house. What we did was got a wireless card for his desktop pc so it wouldn't have to be anchored to the modem and router. Then his laptop could be mobile through out the house and the modem and router could be anywhere he wanted it to be. I do not know any way of having a modem talk to a router wireless.

Ok but I already have an ethernet card in my PC and unless I bypass the router and plug the modem DIRECTLY into the pc, i have no way of sending the signal to the router at the same time for the laptop

That is why you need a wireless card in the desk top. You won't need to plug it in to the modem. You should be able to have the wire coming in to your house go to the modem. From the modem to your router and that is it. No other wires are needed. Your laptop is already wireless and with the edition of the wireless network card for your desktop it will talk to the router.

Don't you have a cable or dsl wire coming in to the house and to your modem. Something like this.

Um, not really. My modem is wireless by itself so there is no wires coming IN the house for it to pick up its signal. The signal it receives is bounced off of antennas and radio towers.

Ok, than forget the wire coming in. Just put the modem and router together in the same room. If you can't have your desktop pc in the same room than buy a wireless network card for it. They are very simple to install and setup. Now you can have the router and modem in the part of the house that receives the best signal and put the desktop and laptop anywhere you want.

Yeah i did that too and still got a shitty signal lol. Its ok though. I talked to tech support again and they are going to send me a wall mount because i can have the modem in the same room as my computer, but the modem needs to be closer to the celing cuz thats where the signal is ironically.
