    Default Computer monitor help

I really hope someone can give me some help with this because I dont know who else I can ask.

For the past month or so, my monitor has been shutting off everytime I push the power button. Heres what happens on a daily basis...

    I turn on the computer

    I turn on the monitor

I then push the power button on the monitor in excess of 20-30 times just to make it show up. When I first turn it on, I get picture for about a second before it goes black and I have to keep pushing the power button on the monitor so that I can have the picture stay.

    Any ideas???

Sounds like maybe the power circuit for the monitor is bad or going bad. If it's not under warranty, I'd get a new one. If it's a CRT, DO NOT, REPEAT DO NOT open it up. There are capacitors in there that power the tube that can kill you if you should happen to short one.

This is going to sound absurd, but have you checked your power settings? Windows features a time limit that the user can set (from 1 minute up to 5 hours) that allows the computer to automatically shut down or go into sleep mode. Check the parameters in your control panel.

maybe the little thingy behind the button that makes contact with the doohickey that turns the monitor on is sticking so when you hit the button, the thingy hits the doohickey which turns on the monitor but the thingy is still making contact with the doohickey which turns off the monitor. So you have to keep hitting the button over and over again so that the thingy hits the doohickey without sticking to it so it leaves the monitor on.
    Stay out of it, dude.

maybe it doesn't like your display driver? I have a monitor that I use when I repair PCS and a lot of times I have to install the display drivers last because otherwise when I boot up the screen goes blank. Try deleting the display driver from your device manager and rebooting. Yeah, it'll readd itself after you reboot, but if the monitor works that one time while it does, then that'll give you an idea.

If this is an LCD we're talking about......

Next time the display goes black, get in real close to the monitor and look for any signs that the display is still showing. If you see this, it means your backing illumination has simply burned out. I've run into this issue with some Samsung models and at least one NEC. If the item is still under warranty they'll send you a new one.

    If this is a CRT.....

Fuck it....get an LCD. They're cheap now.

Very well may be something with your gfx card/display driver, as billy said.

My card went belly up a few months back and monitor was doing same thing as you describe. Bought a new graphics card and fixed the prob.

Just be sure to keep the receipt in case it turns out to be something else.

Yeah i was pricing the LCD's this morning and I was surprised at how cheap they are. The monitor I have is a hand-me-down so the warranty is gone and its from company I cant seem to find. Envision is the company.

I havent tried this yet but it sounds like a good idea. I'll give it a shot

Could it be the loose nut behind the monitor/keyboard? I'm just saying....

It could be your video card. I had a similiar problem and my computer is somewhat older. I had to change the card and get a new monitor as well.

check your graphics/display driver, i've had a tone of issues recently after updating the driver for my graphics card (nvidia 9600 gt), it caused my resolutions to change whenever i played a game or started the P.C. (different resolution each time!) and constant system crashes and on more than a few occasions my monitor failed to display anything, if you have recently updated your driver, try rolling it back...control panel....device manager....find your graphics card, hit properties and you can roll it back from there.
    it cured all my problems.

or around this place, it more likely to be a loose nut in front of the keyboard. Nothing personal I'm just saying............lots of loose nuts all around this place
