Soul is the music people understand. Sure it's basic and it's simple. But it's something else 'cause, 'cause, 'cause it's honest, that's it. Its honest. There's no fuckin' bullshit. It sticks its neck out and says it straight from the heart. Sure there's a lot of different music you can get off on but soul is more than that. It takes you somewhere else. It grabs you by the balls and lifts you above the shite.

    ...another artform lost to rap

You look at the background singers dancing and all, and you think this is what the Backstreet Boys and *Nsync were trying to emulate, but they didn't really come that close. These guys had a subtle style with their moves, not so herky-jerky that the singers are out of breath and thus require a backing track. Oh, and they could sing!

I miss variety shows as well. I used to always watch the Sonny and Cher show, and also Donny and Marie. I once got a Cher doll for Christmas and it was one of my favorite dolls. Yes I was a nerd.

Almost forgot, I love old soul tunes. Give me some O'Jays any day.

There are several clips of these tunes available, but they feature some fairly crummy audio.

I find it amazing that variety shows have fallen out of favour to be honest. Perhaps it's a lack of viable hosts but I would love an 8 pm time slot show with someone hosting a variety show.

and I think you're right...the closest thing to a real variety show would be America's Got Talent, thought that is a modern day Gong Show.
