New York City is buying one-way plane tickets for homeless families to leave the city

NEW YORK — New York City is buying one-way plane tickets for homeless families to leave the city.

It's part of a program by Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration to keep the homeless out of the expensive shelter system, which costs $36,000 a year per family. More than 550 families have left the city since 2007. All it takes is for a relative to agree to take them in.

The city employs a travel agency for domestic travel and the Department of Homeless Services handles international travel.

City officials say there are no limits on where a family can be sent and families can reject the offer.

Families have been sent to 24 states and five continents, mostly to Puerto Rico, Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.

City officials say none of the relocated families have returned to city shelters.

that's actually very cool. Sometimes a family, or an individual finds themselves in shit creek with no means of getting out of town to family that can help them, but just can't afford a plane or bus ticket.

On the other hand, it's got that "we don't want you here you stinking deadbeats vibe" which I also find pretty cool.

Look folks, you tried. You rolled the dice in the big apple but you know what? You couldn't cut it. Here's your plane ticket. Smell you later.
    Stay out of it, dude.

what I find interesting is the number of illegal aliens who are returning to their homeland after finding the type of construction, landscape and manual labor jobs they held are disappearing

read a story about one guy who returned with his family to Mexico, he'd been sending money back there to build a house and support his family....I guess he even sent his brother to law school and now he's back and feeling like a fish out of water...his american born son especially so

She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.

Definitely better than what they were doing down in Daytona a while back....essentially giving them a ride to the next city.
