This is pretty much one from a series of form letters sent by those managed by Irving Azoff to support the Senate committee reviewing the Ticketmaster/Live Nation merger. You'll notice that several of the details are incorrect (the letter claims that Wolfgang joined the band in 2004 according to the day it is dated, it also claims Wolfgang to be 17, he'd only be 15 by 3/16/06), so either Edward Van Halen's head was in a cloud when this was written, or he did not write it at all.

For comparison, here is Irving Azoff's variation of the letter:

Well, the file is blocked by the proxy here at work but I'm guessing he wants legislation against being in two bands.

Eddie is concerned about his fans? I highly doubt that. He's concerned about money. Pearl Jam is concerned about their fans. Eddie should take a lesson from them.

This has to be a fake for two reasons, one I don't think he would get his sons age wrong by two years and two, I highly doubt Eddie would ever use the word "synergy".

You're right, compared to the Azoff letter, it seems like this may be BS...

Or maybe not. This is from the news in March 09:

    Van Halen in his letter:

My 17-year-old son, Wolfgang, joined the band a couple of years ago as our bassist. To have my son follow in my footsteps on his own, without me pushing him into it, is the greatest feeling in the world. Aside from how the merger could help me and my band, Wolfie and his future in this industry is really the reason why I’m in favor of these two trusted companies coming together.

If this deal helps bring our fans closer to the band, with more direct access to merchandise, new music we write, and other promotions we do, it’s going to ensure that Wolfie and I have a future in music. And not just us, but all other musicians trying to make their dream a reality in this economy.

Maybe they just got the date wrong when they posted it?

It's a bogus letter. You're not missing anything here anyway.

Loose translation as to why he's in favor of this merger:

We, the Van Halen family, stand to glean much more money from our "fans" with this action. How would that bring fans closer to the band? It wouldn't. I also had to laugh at his ridiculous statement that he "didn't want to push his son into this".

I find it interesting that so many around here find it impossible to believe that Wolfgang, would, of his own accord, want to play music with his father in one of the most successful american bands of all time.

I just don't get the impression that the kid was pressured into this

No thanks. Last time I saw a Pearl Jam show, they were so boring I walked out halfway through.

I agree. One of the problems with growing older is that we all forget how opinionated and defiant we were (atleast I was) at that age.

If Wolfie didn't want to do it, he probably wouldn't have.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

It will bring the Fan's wallets closer to the band...
