    Default Remastered CDs

I know the first 6 CD's were remastered but I haven't bought any of them. Anyone have an opinion if it is worthwhile; is the sound improvement worth the investment?

Also, does anyone have any idea if there are plans to remaster the Van Hagar stuff? I hate to go from a recently released CD and then to 5150 or OU812 because the sound quality difference is brutal. I think OU812's poor production adds to the problem. (I'm guessing not since it seems like VH4 is denying the history of the band after 1985).

The remasters sound great. Been out for a long while. I think they are worth it.
Not sure if they plan to remaster Van Hagar. I'd doubt it for now. Even if they do remaster them going from the 6 pack to 5150 or OU812 would still be brutal.

The remasters were worth every penny. The difference is like day and night.
I just got back from a drive with Fair Warning blasting.

Only remaster I am interested in owning is FW.

Even if Halen just made that one album and quit....still would be one of the best rock albums ever constructed.

I'm pretty sure they released the Van Hagar remasters in Japan.

Yes, they did. VHIII now. Very expensive to import them but it can be done. Someone posted some very intelligent and well thought out reviews of them on here...found it!

It was posted by Jack Panama. He got them from http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/. And here are his reviews:

For those who haven't been following this thread, On Aug 24, 2005, Warner re-released 5150, OU812, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, Balance, and III in Japan as part of its "Forever Young" series. As is also discussed here, there is NOTHING on these releases that even mentions or indicates that they are remastered, so they've pretty much gone under the radar until now.

Well, first of all, they are indeed REMASTERED!

Second of all, let me just say WOW, I cannot believe how good Summer Nights and AFU sound on these new releases. 5150 & OU812 are like whole new albums. They really sound amazing.

Now, in the interest of full disclosure, the remaster on these new versions isn't quite as good as the job they did on Best of Both Worlds, but they are still quite good. What's more important, however, is that they are, for the most part, miles and away better than the current U.S. versions of the full albums.

5150: Completely awesome. Louder, fuller sound. Worth every penny for the song "5150" alone.

OU812: Again, awesome. Clearer, and now actually featuring Mikey on Bass. Again, worth every penny.

For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge: The difference here is not quite as noticable, but still noticable nonetheless. The sound is clearer, crisper, and in some cases more dynamic. Again, when I compared the versions of Poundcake, Top of the World, Right Now, and Runaround on these new CD's with those on Best of Both Worlds, I still liked the BOBW's versions better. But when I did a side by side of the rest of the songs with the current versions, I slightly preferred the new Japanese remastered versions better. All in all, since it's still an improvement (though a slight one), I'm glad I got it.

Balance: This remaster is a bit more of a mixed bag for me. On the one hand, the new versions do sound clearer and crisper, but that "improvement" somewhat takes away from the albums "heaviness." Eddie's guitars are more accentuated, but Mikey's bass and Alex's drums get somewhat diminished and somehow sound smaller. This actually works well on some songs like Take Me Back and Big Fat Money, but not so well on other songs like Aftershock, Seventh Seal, & Amsterdam. Even so, this remastered Japanese release has one redeeming factor that puts it ahead of the current US version (in my opinion): and that is that it includes "Crossing Over." I had this song before from the "Can't Stop Loving You" CD single, but the production and manufacturing of that version absolutely PALES in comparison to how it sounds on this new Japanese version, and for THAT reason alone, I am thrilled I bought it. (Another cool thing about this version is that it comes with the cover that only has one kid instead of 2... kind of cool!)

All in all, I am glad to say that the wait for the Van Hagar remasters is over (and it has been since 2005). In fact, I am SO satisfied with the sound of these that I went ahead and ordered the remastered version of "III" this afternoon. I am very curious as to how much different it will sound. I mean, I ALWAYS knew that remastered versions of 5150 and OU812 would sound incredible, but the jury is still out on "III." I guess it'd be hard to make it sound any worse, so the way I see it, I can't lose. But we'll see. As with these, I will report back when I get it.

For those interested in picking these up, the catalogue numbers are:

    -5150: WPCR-75068
    -OU812: WPCR-75069
    -For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge: WPCR-75070
    -Balance: WPCR-75071
    -III: WPCR-75072

Thanks Guys. Looks like I'll be dropping some coin to update the CD collection. I have to admit that some of the old CD's do have sentimental value as I remember being a kid in High School buying the very same CD's I'm still playing 20 years later.

I got so frustrated a couple of years ago with the low quality of the CD versions of 5150 and OU812 I did remasters of my own on them. Those are what I put in my iTunes and now carry with me regularly. Still, I'd like to see WB do full U.S. remastered releases of 5150, OU812, and F.U.C.K.

So what of the remastered "III"? If ever there was an album that needed improved "mastering," this is it. Anyone have it? If so, what is your opinion?

The only remastered one I have so far is Women And Children First. It is considerably better than my original.
