    Default All About Tornadoes!

The fears and phobias thread made me think of this...

As a kid, I was FRIGHTENED to death over them. Whenever the sky got dark, I'd start to freak out that something was going to happen. I had terrifying dreams of tornado after tornado touching down and nearing our home and destroying it. Of course, about 8 years ago, I kind of got over the fear of tornadoes and now anxiously sky watch whenever bad weather comes rolling in--I'm always standing outside watching and waiting. I have never been in one and never seen one (though I'd like to go on one of those chasing tours one day). In 2007, I did have a funnel cloud pass right over my house though which was pretty freaky.

So my question here is, anyone ever experienced a tornado before? Any stories?

    Tornadoes rock!

I was scared of them, too, as a kid. I hope I get to see one someday.

I grew up smack dab in the middle of tornado alley and have seen several small ones (F1 thru F3) probably. Nothing major though. I kinda like that rockin' and rollin' thing myself. Spring just wouldn't be the same without wall clouds. If you really wanna see a tornado up close, I'd recommend going out with tornado chaser Roger Hill. He takes a few people with him for about a week to go chasing them across the plains. Pony up a few bucks and go!

Ah yes.......Tornadoes. Live with them year around pretty much here. We lie on the southeast side of Tornado Alley.

Tornadoes are a little freaky, but they are very very intresting.

They don't like trailer parks very much.

I've seen anough funnel clouds and a few tornados, but they've never really bothered me. Now, being out in the Gulf with a waterspout bearing down on a 19' boat, that scared the hell out of me.

So are tornados a clear and present danger in Michigan?

Southest Michigan does get its fair share of tornadoes. Most of the tornadoes around here strike in the Holly area which is about 40-50 miles north of me. I believe in the late 90's there was a minor tornado outbreak in Detroit in July--I remember that day very well, just not the year.

I was 7 years old when that come out and I remember I really liked that song "Humans Being." I listened to it every morning before school.

It's funny how then, that movie scared the shit out of me but now I laugh--the effects are just so...bad.

I also live in Tornado Alley. Albeit the north side, but we see our fair share of them in Iowa. Had a few horrific ones in the last couple years.

When I was in radio, I'd jump in one of the station vehicles and go chasing. As a truck driver, I see them all the time. Nothing cooler to be driving along, watching a tornado a few miles away, just hopping along.

I have lived in tornado alley for a good portion of my life, six years in Nebraska and fifteen here in Kansas and have seen several. I can remember hitting the cellar once in Minnesota as a kid, as well as watching a tornado go just to the south of us when I lived in Marion, Wisconsin. Afterwords, some friends of my parents invited us out to show us the straw that was stuck into some trees from the straw bales that the tornado ripped through.

The most memorable one was the one I didn't see though. This was probably late seventies, early eighties and we were living in Nebraska. There was a nasty thunderstorm and the phone rang. It was a guy from the local fire department and he told us to get in the storm cellar, fast! So we did and spent a good portion of the night in there. The next day the guy called back and said that the spotter had radioed in that the tornado was on the ground and heading right for our house. Right before it got there it lifted up for a bit and then touched down on the other side of the property. There wasn't much in it's path but pasture, but we did find some small bushes that had been demolished.

I was scared to death of them as a kid, but they don't worry me so much anymore.

I came close to getting to see one this last February in Atlanta. I was staying in the top floor of a hotel when it went from Tornado advisory to tornado alert, which meant that I guess rotation was found nearby. They locked the hotel down and I got to watch the sky with an absolutely magnificent view since the room was mostly all window looking east/northeast. Didn't see the nader, but did get to see it go dark, green, and weird. Saw a lot of rotation in the clouds over me, but no touchdown.

Was at a national mock trial comeptition my freshman year of college in Hunstville, Alabama. Had a tornado touch down right beside the hotel I was staying in, pick up a rival school's coach's car and then hop over the hotel. It was the most amazing act of nature I have ever seen. (Which includes almost being struck by lightning, 3 hurricanes and several tropical storms.) I should have probably been in the hallway doing the duck and cover thing, but I was too enthralled to leave.

I have always been freaked out by tornadoes. I have never seen one, but we've lived thru plenty of tornado watches and warnings. Whenever a tornado show is on the Weather Channel or elsewhere, I am GLUED. When the sky turns green, I get nervous, but serious. I make plans, get prepared, and watch the Doppler Radar like a fiend.

I often have dreams where there are 20+ tornadoes on the ground at the same time, and I'm driving around them.
