Was the 1981 Fair Warning Tour the best ?

Was the 1981 Tour the Best from a musical and band energy stand point ?

EVH was at the top of his game back around that time, that was his best guitar work IMHO and his Holdsworth influence is very pronounced on Fair Warning.

As a 10 year old back in '81, I had never heard of them so I can only go by bootlegs. Eddie certainly was tearing it up on guitar!

Im jealous as hell that you even got to see it, sjc. At the tender age of 11, all that I know of this tour are the handful of videos that got MTV airplay back in the day.

My opinion, Based on all the concerts I've witnessed and all the bootlegs in existence, is that Van Halen's 1979 & 1981 tours were their most spectacular. And you'd also have to include their 1978 tour, since it was the first time the world ever saw them, even though the set list was shorter and they were still evolving into what they became the next year, during their first headlining tour, in '79. Rock 'n' roll peaked with early Van Halen.

I saw VH in 78/79 at Anaheim Stadium where they did the "parachute" to the stage stunt and they blew everyone before them off the stage and everyone after them.
Roth was a Mad man back then.... he hadnt perfected the stage rap and front man routine quite yet but he and Eddie owned the stage.

That was the one tour I was supposed to see but the guy that was supposed to drive decided not to go. Since the concert was like 60 miles away, I got shafted.

This is especially painful for me to read seeing as how I live maybe 15 min from Angel Stadium. Pass the fucker on the 57 every day as a matter of fact on the way to work and back for the past five years.

Trust me, had it not been for the fact that the dude was generally a pretty cool guy and usually offered to drive a bunch of us to Hollywood for the shows, we'd probably have all piled on top of him and beat him senseless.

I wish I could say I saw that tour in person but from all the boots out there, I'd have to say from the Dave era...absolutely. I thought the 84' tour was awesome, but I just loved the vibe Ed played with during FW, and it shows on those boots. He just had such a raw gritty energy at that time that just had so much emotion. I still think 5150 holds water (though not a comparison because the style musically had changed somewhat), as far as the fun and energy, and the way the music gelled live. You can't go by LWAN though. it's a great DVD (I got it on VHS when it came out, and wore that sucker out!), but they even admit they were getting tired by that point, and Eddie called the performance "average". His playing was bang on. His solo spot was flawless.

Did a poll about this not long ago and it does hold as the tour most would want to see. IMO those Oakland vids are the difference maker.

These results always surprised me....thought for sure the earlier years would run away with it.

VH with Sam ('86-'96) - Incredible era....."We have renamed this town 'New Halen!'.
VH with Gary ('98) - Fucking disaster. WTF was that??
VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

interested to see the various points of view on this. I never saw them during this period and have only heard a couple of bootleg clips over the years.
    Stay out of it, dude.

That would be a resounding "HELL YES". Fair Warning is a masterpiece from start to finish and the tour was the pinnacle of their hunger. IMO, that was their "Dark Side of the Moon".
