Default My First "REAL" Year of College Begins in August!

I had my transfer student orientation today at Michigan State University. I used to hate that place but I'm starting to warm up to it now--but am still a U-M fan.

After two years of community college (but it saved money) I'm so anxious to move on and away. Since I'm coming in as a junior, the "real" classes are starting--no more bullshit general education credits. BUT, I was smart enough to plan my classes out so I'm not getting up at 7 or 8 in the morning.

For the fall I'm taking 13 credits towards my first Bachelor's Degree in English (I'll be teaching that and history).

    College Algebra: M-F 11:30AM-12:20
    US History to 1876: M, W, Thu 12:40PM-2
Intro to the Study of English: M, W 3PM-4:50

And in the spring I'm taking 15

    English Literature to 1660: M, W, F 10:20AM-11:40AM
    Natural Hazards and the Environment: M, W, F 1:50PM-2:40
    Geology Lab: Thu 8AM-9:50
Teacher Education 150: Tue, Thu 12:40PM-2
Teacher Education 250: Tu, Thu 3PM-4:20

I really have no time complaints at all.

But I just checked ratemyprofessor.com for some of these teachers and quite frankly, I'm a little nervous. I always use that site before picking classes but I had no opportunity at orientation today. I'm not a great math student and apparently the teacher gives "tricky" tests and is very confrontational. The English teacher apparently wants a paper a week (which isn't bad at all) but makes people read at random and is apparently very full of himself--which I find to be a regularity in many college English professors.

I'm not going to let it discourage me though, I'm looking forward to the fall and a new challenge.

I never picked my classes based on the professor. One, too much trouble. But two, I don't have the kind of luck to be able to avoid a certain professor. I mean juggling class times, requirements and keeping units at full time was difficult enough. But I went to a small private college so I guess it's different.

ANYWAY, congrats! You sound excited and full of hope, lucky!

    congrats!

don't worry about choosing confrontational or difficult professors....you're going to need to learn how to deal with all sorts of people in the work place, so it's nice to get a head start on honing the people skills you'll need

That's what I was thinking. Initially, I was considering trying to switch into another class, but I figured if I want to teach English, I'm going to run into some hard-nosed professor sooner or later--and using a lame ass sports cliche, I'll just have to...grind it out.

Ah the good ole days. My GPA would have been alot higher with computers and spell check. Have fun at the football games.

One thing, ratemyprofessors.com is a site with limited information so don't base too much on that. The sample sizes are extremely small and those that provide input on instructors/professors tend to be on one extreme or the other in regards to their views. Also, student opinions will often differ significantly in regards to the same instructor/professor for a lot of reasons, including the motivation and ability of the students providing their opinions. A lot of instructors/professors also aren't even listed on the site. The best information would be the course/teacher evaluations that students fill out towards the end of each semester, but unfortunately students don't have access to those unless an instructor/professor includes this information on their resume/vita (which most won't, especially if they are weak or mediocre). You can also do a search to see if the instructor/professor won or were nominated for any teaching awards, which is usually a good indication of quality. Although there are no perfect measures of the quality of an instructor/professor, those will give you some idea.

Good luck with your studies at MSU.

Finishing my undergrad was really tough, it's such a great life. Make the most of it, and like most people, you're going to have good and bad professors no matter the research you do on them.

That's a very good point. The one thing that will benefit a student regardless of the instructor/professor, though, is putting forth the required effort to succeed, showing interest in the subject being studied, and not making excuses, especially when they involve fabrication, stretching of the truth, or outright lying. Based on their experience and interaction with many students, teachers can usually sense with a high amount of accuracy which students are and aren't engaging in these types of behaviors. Nonetheless, bad teachers can make a student's ability to learn more difficult but a student should still be able to take something of value from every course they take.
